  2. What started our transition? • Our WebCT CE license was set to expire in December 2007 • Blackboard would not extend it • Therefore, we had to move to something else…

  3. Why Sakai? • Issues with WebCT • Ability to innovate • Campus Fit • Stability, Security, Enterprise-readiness

  4. What was our timeline? • May to October 2006: Taskforce to compare Vista and Sakai • November 2006: Decision to move to Sakai • December 2006: Unicon hired to help with the jumpstart and integration process • May 2007: We went live with a pilot of Sakai for the summer session • Fall semester 2007: We started full switch over • December 2007: WebCT went away

  5. What resources did we need? • Hardware • People • Integration work • Some customization

  6. Lessons LearnedSome obvious, some GT specific… • Speed creates a trade-off • Alliances are key • This is an academic project • Responsiveness is vital • Openness and Flexibility need to be reinforced

  7. More Lessons Learned • Engaging the community is important • You have to learn how to be a member of an open-source community • You take on the role of vendor (trade-off) • Know where your largest pain points will be and put your resources to alleviate these first

  11. Sample Faculty/TA Feedback (+) • Easy to use – almost no learning curve to get started • Like being able to use one platform for teaching, research, and service • Like being able to set up project sites without outside authorization process • Like being able to bring in non-GT users

  12. More Feedback (-) • Problems with interface (navigation, etc.) • Gradebook issues • Assignment issues • E-mail issues • Desire for customization

How is Sakai supported at GT? • Full backing by the Provost’s Office • New positions: • Director of Educational Technology • Two developers (asked for four) • Redirected positions: • 2 CETL instructional technologists -- end user support • 2 support people from OIT • 1.5 positions for back-end support from OIT Note – WebCT was never fully supported as an important initiative on campus, so this is a very large culture shift for us.

  14. Training and User Support • Training sessions (face to face). In first year: • almost 500 instructors/TAs • On-line files • Remedy ticket system for bug reports, help requests, feature suggestions • Phone calls from frustrated folks
