Digital Stories • Storytelling is the practice of using computer-based tools to tell stories. As with traditional storytelling, most digital stories focus on a specific topic and contain a particular point of view. However, as the name implies, digital stories usually contain some mixture of computer-based images, text, recorded audio narration, video clips and/or music. • A digital story consists of a series of still images combined with a narrated soundtrack to tell a story.
More on Digital Stories The topics that are used in Digital Storytelling range from personal tales to the recounting of historical events, from exploring life in one's own community to the search for life in other corners of the universe, and literally, everything in between. Digital stories can vary in length, but most of the stories used in education typically last between two and ten minutes.
Computer-based or Web-based? • Digital Stories are created on programs such as: - PowerPoint - Windows Live Movie Maker - Photo Story - iMovie These programs usually come installed on your computer, therefore digital stories would be considered a computer-based assessment.
More on Computer-based or Web-based? • When creating digital stories you can find images and audio on the Web. • Image Search Engines include: - Google - Picsearch - Alta Vista • Audio Search Engines include: - Singing Fish - Alta Vista
Cost • When you purchase your lap top or computer, you also pay for several different programs. If you get a MAC, you'll have access to iMove. If you buy a PC, you'll have access to PowerPoint or Windows Live Movie Maker. So essentially, creating digital stories are free!
Data • With digital stories, you are able to see what the students know about the topic at hand, whether if its a "How to" presentation or recounting historical events. Teachers can assess student knowledge after viewing their digital stories. • Specifically, if students are creating “How to” presentations, their final or summative assessment would be their digital story!
Using Digital Stories to Drive Instruction • Teachers can assess student's progress along the way as they create their final digital stories. This allows teachers to provide instruction as students make their stories.
Differentiating Instruction • With digital stories, students are able to be as creative as they wish and show their individuality. Teachers are able to address each student’s needs when reviewing their drafts of their digital stories. The teacher is able to change instruction based on the type of learner each student is.
