  2. 500,000 B.C. • Fire was discovered • It was needed for the spread of civilization • It hurried the movements of early humans • It allowed people to move into colder climates • It allowed food to be heated almost anywhere

  3. 7,000 B.C. • Began using pottery • Was used for storing food for long periods of time • Nomads used them for transporting drinks • Could be used as a grinding tool

  4. 6,000 B.C. • Began using linen and bricks • Linen was used to wrap mummies • Also used to make early forms of cloth • Brick were used to make houses

  5. 5,000 B.C. • The beginning of the Mesopotamian civilization • The first time Ziggurats were recognized • The first uses of copper • The first amounts of Maize

  6. 3,500 B.C. • The invention of the cart with wheels • The first formation of the number system • The cart with wheel was used to transport goods • The number system was first used to count and measure fields

  7. 3,100 B.C. • Early development of writing • Hieroglyphs were first used • Cuneiform was also first created • Began the timeline to the current form of writing • Important because it let us know what was going on in history

  8. 3,000 B.C. • The first makings of clothes • Romans received severe criticism for wearing wrong types of clothing • Egyptian women wore long, tight skirts; men wore short skirts

  9. 2,800 B.C. • Early development of the calendar • Year was divided into 12 months • Based on the cycle of the moon and sun • Greeks and Egyptians copied the calendar

  10. 2,700 B.C. • Old kingdom of Egypt began • First step pyramid was built • Pyramid was first monument built of cut stone • Pyramid was the burial ground for the Pharaoh Zoser

  11. 2,550 B.C. • The construction of the great pyramids • They were built at Giza • Constructed to serve as tombs • Also built to protect the bodies of pharaohs, their family members, and their possessions • Some possessions were later dug up by archeologist

  12. 2,500 B.C. • The time glass was first made • The first known library • The Indus River Valley came about • Glass was often used to adorn furniture and vessels • Libraries were first used as royal archives

  13. 2,300 B.C. • Paper was invented • Was first considered to not be paper • Egyptians used it to paint • Started the evolution of paper
