  1. Romans 1:16 To live is Christ:I’m not ashamed of the gospel

  2. The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples, That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word. He awakens Me morning by morning, He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.5 The Lord God has opened My ear; And I was not disobedient Nor did I turn back.6 I gave My back to those who strike Me, And My cheeks to those who pluck out the beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and spitting. 7 For the Lord God helps Me, Therefore, I am not disgraced; Therefore, I have set My face like flint, And I know that I will not be ashamed.8 He who vindicates Me is near; Who will contend with Me? Let us stand up to each other; Who has a case against Me? Let him draw near to Me. 9 Behold, the Lord God helps Me; Who is he who condemns Me? Behold, they will all wear out like a garment; The moth will eat them. Isaiah 50:4-9

  3. Who is the text talking about? • Obviously not the nation or the people in it. • Vs. 1-3. Isaiah 50:4-9

  4. Thus says the Lord, “Where is the certificate of divorce By which I have sent your mother away? Or to whom of My creditors did I sell you? Behold, you were sold for your iniquities, And for your transgressions your mother was sent away. 2 “Why was there no man when I came? When I called, why was there none to answer? Is My hand so short that it cannot ransom? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, I dry up the sea with My rebuke, I make the rivers a wilderness; Their fish stink for lack of water And die of thirst. 3 “I clothe the heavens with blackness And make sackcloth their covering.” Isaiah 50:1-3

  5. Who is the text talking about? • Obviously not the nation or the people in it. • Vs. 1-3. • All the chapters leading up to it. • These all show that the nation was not very righteous. • Could it display Jesus? • He has the tongue of disciples • Or follower • He was not disobedient nor turned away • He did Gods will Isaiah 50:4-9

  6. Who is the text talking about? • Obviously not the people • Could it display Jesus? • He has the tongue of disciples. • He was not disobedient nor turned away • He gave his back to the smiters and beard to them who plucked the hair. • When Jesus was being beaten and whipped he willingly gave them his back and his cheek Isaiah 50:4-9

  7. If it talks about Jesus then this should be an example for us. (1 Cor. 11:1) Isaiah 50:4-9

  8. Be imitators of me, just as I also am of Christ. 1 Corinthians 11:1

  9. If it talks about Jesus then this should be an example for us. (1 Cor. 11:1) • Jesus endured the pain and suffering of the cross yet: • Was not ashamed • Set his face like flint • Went to the cross determined • Still trusted in God Isaiah 50:4-9

  10. Who has believed our message? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him. 3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. 4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed. 6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him. Isaiah 53:1-12

  11. 7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth. 8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due? 9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth. 10 But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. 11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities. 12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors Isaiah 53:1-12

  12. Again another passage referring to Jesus • It says he wasn’t attractive (Vs.1) • He was despised by men (Vs.3) • A man of sorrows acquainted with grief (Vs.3) • He was afflicted (Vs.4) • He was pierced (Vs.5) • Yet through all of this he was silent (Vs.7) • And he considered all of this nothing (Hebrews 12:1-2) Isaiah 53:1-12

  13. Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1-2

  14. Despising the shame. • He considered the shame to be nothing • But Why? Hebrews 12:1-2

  22. The Gospel is Christ. Romans 1:1-6 What is the Gospel?

  23. Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake, 6 among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ; Romans 1:1-6

  24. The Gospel is Christ. Romans 1:1-6 • It is his death and resurrection. (Vs. 4) • This is what Paul isn't ashamed of. What is the Gospel?

  25. Because of what Jesus did for you and I. • Because Jesus endured: • The shame • The beating • The persecution • The spitting • The cross • He did all of this to save us of our sins Why is paul not ashamed?

  26. Because of what Jesus did for you and I. • Because Jesus endured: • Because it saves us. • John 3:16-17 Why is paul not ashamed?

  27. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.” John 3:16-17

  28. Because of what Jesus did for you and I. • Because Jesus endured: • Because it saves us. • John 3:16-17 • Galatians 1:4 Why is paul not ashamed?

  29. who gave Himself for our sins so that He might rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, Galatians 1:4

  31. and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed. 1 Peter 2:24

  32. Because of what Jesus did for you and I. • Because it saves us. • Because if we are ashamed of Jesus and the gospel, Jesus will be ashamed of us • Mark 8:38 Why is paul not ashamed?

  33. For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.” Mark 8:38

  34. The gospel in Greek is translated “good news” or “glad tidings” • It is the best news ever! • If you are ashamed of it, the death of Jesus does nothing for you • Be a bold Christian, not a bold sinner WE should not be Ashamed of the gospel

  35. Because Jesus died for me Because Paul went to such great lengths to get the message to me (2 Corinthians 11:23-27) I'm not ashamed

  36. Are they servants of Christ?—I speak as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. 24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brethren; 27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 2 Corinthians 11:23-27

  37. Because Jesus died for me Because Paul went to such great lengths to get the message to me (2 Corinthians 11:23-27) Because of the numerous people who died for it (Hebrews 11:35-40) I'm not ashamed

  38. Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection; 36 and others experienced mockings and scourgings, yes, also chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, they were tempted, they were put to death with the sword; they went about in sheepskins, in goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, ill-treated 38 (men of whom the world was not worthy), wandering in deserts and mountains and caves and holes in the ground. 39 And all these, having gained approval through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40 because God had provided something better for us, so that apart from us they would not be made perfect. Hebrews 11:35-40

  39. 2 Timothy 1:8,12 Paul warns timothy not to be ashamed

  40. 8 Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God, 12 For this reason I also suffer these things, but I am not ashamed; for I know whom I have believed and I am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day. 2 Timothy 1:8,12

  41. 2 Timothy 1:8,12 • Therefore let not us be ashamed • Through persecution let us stand firm in Christ • Through trials and tribulations trust in Christ • Through everything seek him first Paul warns timothy not to be ashamed

  42. Who we are singing this to • If you don’t mean that “I’m not ashamed to own my Lord” then don’t sing it (Isaiah 1:11-15) As we sing #273 keep in mind

  43. 11 “What are your multiplied sacrifices to Me?” Says the Lord “I have had enough of burnt offerings of rams And the fat of fed cattle; And I take no pleasure in the blood of bulls, lambs or goats. 12 “When you come to appear before Me, Who requires of you this trampling of My courts? 13 “Bring your worthless offerings no longer, Incense is an abomination to Me. New moon and sabbath, the calling of assemblies— I cannot endure iniquity and the solemn assembly. 14 “I hate your new moon festivals and your appointed feasts, They have become a burden to Me; I am weary of bearing them. 15 “So when you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide My eyes from you; Yes, even though you multiply prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are covered with blood. Isaiah 1:11-15
