  1. Gothic Art 1280-1515 Emerging from the Dark Ages

  2. Paintings • The Gothic style of painting was a dark, naturalistic, beautiful style of painting and art itself. • The combination of traditional Gothic style and Renaissance art created a wonderful mix of the two styles that would result in a great painting full of uniqueness and wonder. • Oil paintings were probably the most common form found in Gothic paintings. • These paintings truly showed the changes that were occurring in Europe, the change from the dark Middle Ages to a more civilized society. 3. Early Gothic • Flat altarpieces • Gold halos • Madonna and Child • Sacred conversation • Limited understanding of perspective • Giotto di Bondone

  4. Late Gothic • Gothic painting evolved from stiff and simple forms into more natural and spatial ones (as did sculpture). • Only by the 14th century it reached maturity in the decoration of retables (altar pieces) • and miniature illustrations of books, like the calendar illustrations of the Limburg brothers. 5. Gothic Sculpture • On the continent, sculpture was used primarily to decorate the exterior of the cathedral. • Stone figures represented saints and biblical scenes. • Decoration focused on the west portal and usually this portal was decorated first. • In consequence, the west portal at Chartres demonstrates Early Gothic sculpture while the north and south porches contain statues from the High Gothic period.

  6. Printmaking • Gutenberg press 1455 first book printed was the Gutenberg Bible • The Apocalypse of St. JohnNetherlandsc. 1440Wood engraving • The left-hand folio of the book of wood engravings, The Apocalypse of St. John illustrates the Opening of the Third and Fourth Seal. • The third horseman, Famine, riding a black horse carrying a scale; • the fourth, emerging from the mouth of hell, is labelled Death or more precisely the Plague, astride a pale horse with a bowl from which flames emerge.

  7. At the same time, Christianity was entering a new and triumphant phase of its history, and so the age of chivalry was also the time of the building of the magnificent Gothic cathedrals
