  1. The Census Records - Ireland • The Census is a record of the population of Ireland taken in 1901 and 1911. • They contain information such as names, addresses, ages, occupations, marital status and literacy. • They are more accessible than parish records as they are available on the national archives website free of charge.

The 1901 and 1911 Census • The 1901 and 1911 Census provides an insight into life in Ireland in the early part of the Twentieth Century such as occupation and average family size in urban and rural areas. • To search the Census at least one of the following fields must be answered on the national archives website – year; surname; forename; county; DED; town land; gender.

  3. Using the Census Record • The Census can be used as the first point of call in family research with the provision of a name or area. • It can be also be used for a demographic overview of a particular area on a given year. • The Census is a vital source of information for a historian due to the key information that is provided in the records.

  4. Accessing the Census Both the 1901 and 1911 Census can be accessed for free in Ireland on www.nationalarchives.ie Follow the link on the left hand side of the home page 1901 and 1911 censuses - all counties available online.

  6. Searching the Census • Select ‘the search the Census records’ option on the following page. • This will bring you to search page. • Complete the fields according to your search query

Using the Records • Complete the forename, surname and county fields of the search options. • This can be someone of your own family or a landlord from an area. • Keep your initial search query broad and flexible in order to wield more results. • This can be narrowed down further subsequently according to your query.

  9. Using the Records • Alter your search questions if satisfactory results are not found. • Different spellings and informal names are often encountered in the census records. • EXAMPLES: • Patrick – Padraig – Paddy – Pat • O’ Meara – Meara – O Mara • Catholic – Cathlic – R.C.

  10. Other Sources Other sources are available both online and in libraries and archives. Griffith’s valuation is accessible through www.irishorigins.com, however a subscription is required for full access. The National Library and the National Archives are both based in Dublin – see websites for further information on their repositories.
