Breakout Session B3:Data Collection – Information Sharing • Models • Need for well understood reference sites that can be used to test models
Session B3 • Data Sharing • Within project: across disciplines vs. disciplines • Outside Project: Science; Outreadh • Existing Examples: Well Defined • Gen Bank • Protein Structure • XML – “the thing that is good about standards is that there are plenty of them”
Session B3 • Data Systems need to be planned in advance of data collection • PI’s need to avoid cutting data systems to meet budget goals
Session B3 • Long-term Goals – Does NSF intend data systems to be archival? If so, NSF needs to provide the mechanism, hardware, etc. -- LIKE FASTLANE • Does archival require top-down mandate? (e.g., CDIAC respository for AmeriFlux data) • Aren’t very many successful bottom-up examples (protein structure) • We need a tool box for data management as well as outreach
Session B3 • Can “results from prior NSF support” be used to drive a bottom-up archival system – perhaps NSF provides a web site. • The good data examples are all “simple.” • Are there good data systems for complex data?
Breakout Session 6Governance and Institutional Structure Institutional Administration • IntD: high administration demand • IntD: Time demanding • Teaching loads and demands • Department organization format • Promote department cooperation at top • Indirect cost/sharing methods • Reduce departmental territoriality • Promote IntD interactions IntD = interdisciplinary
Session B6 Professional: Promotion and Recognition • Universal reward system and time obligation • Tenure system and “accomplishment” • Recognition that IntD is meritorious • Recognition that varied publications are scholarly • Push consideration of IntD • “Hold on” to interdisciplinary strength thinking • Promote: IntD not a loss to disciplines • Use events and series for showing value
Session B6 Early Career Experiences • New PhDs: interested but no team skills • New PhDs: Lack IntD exposure as students • No initial means to learn about other disciplines • Large, coordinated, and integrated REUs • IntD seminars • “NCEAS-type” opportunities for students • “Capstone” experience for near Ph.D. students
Session B6 International Interdisciplinary • Time coordination and developing efforts • Supporting developing country students • Supporting visitors and stays • NO Serious Impediments -- • More use of planning workshops and groups Extras and from Lunch • Impediments are at “our” level • Tell your colleagues to try being • Positive • Construction • adaptable
