Thermal Device Design Challenge: Keep the Heat by Jeremy Gerber.

Join the Northridge High School's thermodynamics event divided into Device Testing and a Written Test. Create a device to retain heat in a 15 cm cube for C or 20 cm cube for B without foam or commercial insulation, with a 1.5 cm hole for a thermometer. Check out recommended resources for practice and advice. Focus on simplifying math, memorizing laws, and assembling a great binder. Scores include 50 pts for the test, 10 pts for plots, and evaluation of heat retention and prediction accuracy. Contact Gerberj@mcsin-k12.org for queries.

  1. Thermodynamics/Keep The Heat Jeremy Gerber Northridge High School

  2. Divided into two parts. • Part 1: Device Testing • Part 2: Written Test over Thermodynamic concepts. The Event

  3. Must fit in a 15 cm cube for C • Must fit in a 20 cm cube for B • No Foam, bubblewrap, commercial insulation. • Must be easily able to insert and remove a 250 mL beaker. Important! • Must have a 1.5 cm hole at the top for probe/thermometer. The Device

  4. Experiment early and often. • Outlandish ideas sometimes are the best. • Be the taskmaster. • GET A COMPUTERIZED PROBE. • PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE! • http://www.soinc.org/thermodynamics_c • http://www.scioly.org • http://www.vernier.com/products/sensors/temperature-sensors/go-temp/ • Don’t go for bonus points unless your sure! The Device Advice

  5. THE SAME TOPICS FOR B AND C!!! • This event can get over a B division kids head quick! • Focus on simpler math • Memorize the Laws • HAVE A GREAT BINDER! • http://www.khanacademy.org/science/physics/thermodynamics • http://www.dummies.com/store/product/Thermodynamics-For-Dummies.productCd-1118002911.html The Test

  6. MUST IMPOUND • Test 50 pts. • Plots (4 of them) 10 pts. • Heat Retention Score • Prediction Score • Ice Water Bonus • Prediction > Retention Scoring
