  4. Thrust Area II: Research Projects and Lead Researchers

  5. Idealized Numerical Simulations (Huang & Lin) AEW-like disturbances can be produced by vortex shedding associated with flow over mountains (e.g., EH).

  6. Global Modeling of AEW-MCS Generation (A&T: Tang, Lin; Students: James & Van) • Adopt FIM model developed by the NOAA/ESRL (Lee and Koch) Icosahedral Model Icosahedral Grid

  7. Generation ofAEW-MCS in Eastern Africa (Lin, Liu, Tang; Students: James, Wilson, Chaunte, Riem) Click here to see animation

  8. Origin of Pre-Debby (2006) AEW-MCS

  9. African Dust Effects on Hurricane Helene (2006): Temporal evolution of Pmin & optical depth (Bae & students) Hurricane; Dust & sulfate & absorbing smoke Tropical depression; Sulfate & Heavy absorbing smoke Extratropical; NA Tropical storm; Dust & sulfate TS Debby (2006) behaved similarly.

  10. Modeling Effects of Saharan Dust on Hurricanes (Bae, Lin, Tang, Roop) Courtesy of NASA-TOMS

  11. Effect of ocean spray lubrication effect TC intensity (Rastigejev, Lin) Sandwich model: The effect of the ocean spray on the hurricane dynamics is two-fold : Ocean spray Atmosphere • Thermodynamic: Evaporation of droplets in the ocean spray causes cooling of the atmosphere (Lighthill, 1999) • Mechanical: Significant reduction of turbulence induces a sharp flow acceleration (Barenblatt et al., 2005) Ocean

  12. We found that the mixing length reduction significantly enhances lubrication effect to be more than twice forKoc=0.5. We developed an E-e closure model to help verify our results and provide more realistic calculation. Uses full prognostics equations for turbulent kinetic energy and dissipation rate with no mixing length assumption

  13. Simulations of Landfalling Hurricanes at NC A&T (Dr. Roop) Ike (2008) Gustav (2008) Hanna (2008) Kyle (2008)
