Competence Center Technology-Diversity-Equal Chances Shaping technology – Making equal opportunity a reality The non-profit organization Competence Center Technology – Diversity – Equal Chances develops and carries out a wide range of initiatives and projects that exploit the potential of women as well as men to realise equal opportunities in all spheres of society and work.

Competence Center Technology-Diversity-Equal Chances • OBJECTIVES • use diversity as a success factor in achieving gender and generational equality • benefit from women´s potentials to shape technology, science and the information society • create a broad social dialogueand promote a change of consciousness • involve the public with broad campaigns • get companies, research centers and universities involved into gender and diversity-related projects and public action

Competence Center Technology-Diversity-Equal Chances • The activities are bundled into three areas of expertise: • OUR GOAL: to strengthen media literacy and increase Internet use • OUR GOAL: to foster new ways of thinking about career orientation and life planning, • OUR GOAL: to promote equal opportunity and excellence in higher education and research. Digital Integration focuses on equal access to changed lifestyles and labor markets. Training, further education and careers concentrates on gender-oriented vocational and life planning and the transition from school to work. Higher education, science and research intensifies efforts to promote talented young women in academic subjects and research.

Selected Projects - eInclusion Women to Web Campaign gives access to the Internet www.frauen-ans-netz.de • 2004 – to 2005 • more than 37.000 participants taking part • 58 % between 60 – 70 years old • 1999 – to 2005 • more than 160.000 women participating in 17.600 courses • together with 400 organisations throughout the country 50plus-to-Web gives access to the Internet for the (N)ONLINER-Generation www.50plus-ans-netz.de

Online-Year 50plus – Internet connects • program of events for senior citizens of both genders • to raise the level of Internet participation and media competency of the 50-plus generation Ursula von der Leyen, German Federal Minister of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youthacts as patron of the Online-Year 50plus

Selected Projects – Girls’Day Girls‘Day – Future Prospects for Girls • Every 4th Thursday of April technical enterprises, universities, research centers and other organizations invite to an open day for girls – the Girls’Day • The nationwide campaign presents a wide range of professions in technology, ICT, natural sciences and crafts to girls from grade 5 to 10 • The vocational choices of girls are influenced in a very positive way • The Girls’Day encourages the surroundings of young women - families, school, media and employers – to participate and change their common attitudes • The next Girls’Day is on the 26th of April 2007 25. April 2006 – Girls‘Day started in the office of the federal chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel.

Selected Projects – Girls‘Day • Project Partners for the Girls`Day are: • German Federal Ministry of Education and Research • German Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth • Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA ) • Federation of German Industries (BDI) • German Confederation of Trade Unions (DGB) • Federal Employment Agency (BA) • German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK) • German Confederation Of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) • Initiative D21 Max-Planck-Institute Stuttgart An Impulse for Europe: based on the German model a Girls´Day is organized in Austria, Luxemburg, Belgium and the Netherlands. Cross-border Activities take place with Austria, Luxemburg and Poland. University of Applied Sciences Bielefeld

Selected Projects – New Paths for Boys New Paths for Boys - Expanding Future Opportunities in Work and Family Life Nationwide Project for initiatives dealing with the career- and life planning of boys • Service bureau for empowering initiatives and setting up a network • Helping to build or find new local initiatives supporting men and boys • Database for good practice • Breaking new grounds for boys by supporting new male role-models • Giving information about „new“ professions for boys • Strengthening the social skills of men and boys • Helping teachers to implement new concepts for boys into the curriculum

Year of Technology 2004: • 85 nationwide events Einstein Year 2005 • Winning qualified women for careers in sciene, Experiments created for girls, being most useful for boys, too Informatics Year 2006 • Presenting women in informatics, female award winners and innovators, gender statistics, studies and best practice pro- jects and hands on workshops for girls
