Searching For Ideas • Read all emails that come from our office and law school announcements • Use our website at www.luc.edu/law/career/index.html • Username: student • Password: loyolaonline • Attend our programs • Read our blog • Check Symplicity often • Stay informed about the legal community and business

Take Action & Be Prepared • Get work experience & develop your skills • Update your resumes/cover letters • Have your counselor review • Do a mock interview prior to any interviews • Network – your counselor will give you names • Obtain reciprocity • Job search handouts, books, newsletters, etc. • CSO website and library

  4. Things To Consider • Don’t wait to acquire experience • Be realistic and open-minded • Consider all opportunities • If you are not sure – talk to your counselor • Get organized – create a file

  6. Large Law Firms • Large Firms Making Decisions Now • Large or boutique firms – 2Ls and 3Ls • Usually want top 10-20% or specialized ed/exp. • Resumes, cover letters, transcripts now • To Find: Go to nalpdirectory.com • Send whether OCI or not • Leverage any personal connections you have

Smaller Law Firms • Small & Medium Firms • No OCI b/c don’t have summer associates • Usually expect resumes & interview in the spring • Identify firms you want to work for – active search • 4 or More List • Find out how/when they hire • Students who worked there in prior years • Loyola alums – ask your counselor • Contact law office directly – 4 or More List

  8. Government Summer 2013 • Many government deadlines for summer hiring are in the fall. (DOJ: early Sept; FBI-mid October) • Honors/Internship Programs available in the Arizona Handbook (many federal and some state). • Use our Government website, Use USAJobs.gov • Attend Government Programs This Fall: Meet the Public Service Organizations Reception (Nov. 5) • Contact offices you are interested in to learn their hiring deadlines and meet with alumni

  9. Public Interest Summer 2013 • Larger PI orgs do their summer hiring in the fall. • Research PI orgs now to learn their hiring deadlines. National-PSLawNet, Illinois-llinoislegaladvocate.org/ • A key issue is funding; sources include: PILI-applications available October 15, PILS, EJW Summer Corps (see our website) • Attend • Equal Justice Works Job Fair in DC – October 26 & 27 • Public Service Employers Event: November 5 • MPILCC Job Fair – early February

Public Interest & Government • Very important to gain relevant experience now and to demonstrate commitment to issues and/or organization. • Position yourself now for after graduation • Be strategic • Post Graduate Fellowships • Deadlines are in early fall 3L year but need to plan now • Government Honors Programs • Deadlines are in early fall 3L year but need to plan now • For non-law: Presidential Management Fellowship • 2Ls: A few government offices do OCI

Judicial Externships/Clerkships • Externship info sessions for Spring 2013 externships: September 13 & 14 • Judicial Clerkships Application Process • You must sign up next April 2013 • Info sessions take place each March • Letters of Recommendation next May & June • Applications process all next summer

Improve Your Chances • Talk to alumni in your area(s) of interest • Request informational interviews with alums – much like regular interviews, be prepare • How to find alums: • LinkedIn • Martindale.com • Your counselor • Loyola’s Alumni Database – see website • Nervous about approaching alums? • Talk with counselor, see 1L CSO Handbook • Attend practice-area-specific events

  13. Improve Your Chances • Make Your Resume Shine • Work this school year to build skills • Get those skills on your resume • Do a clinic or externship • Moot Court • Volunteer to build skills/resume • Proofread carefully before send out

  14. Improve Your Chances • Look beyond Chicago • Collar counties and Springfield – many lawyers • Ties to another city? (home town), you may be more in demand there • Reciprocity with school in that city (Nov. 1) • Use your Thanksgiving/Winter Break sensibly • Be available for interviews at no cost to them

  15. Use Your Student Status • Increase your network while you are still a student – it is much easier when a student • Maintain contact with your network • Update contacts on your progress
