  3. Why start options in Year 9? Qualification reforms • Opportunity to study subjects in depth and to increase the chances of being successful. • GCSE now mostly linear qualifications • Increased challenge in content • New 9-1 grading system • BTEC examined unit • Greater theoretical demand on ‘practical’ subjects

  4. Grading System and Tiers • Must achieve a grade 4 or above in English and Maths or will be required to re-take them at college. • Expectation for entry requirements to college could well be asking for grade 5’s in the future rather than grade 4’s. They may also be asking for 8 qualifications as a minimum. • Some qualifications have tiered papers. • Maths, Science and MFL • Higher or Foundation paper • Higher - 9-4 • Foundation - 5-1 • More students will now take foundation papers as it still allows them the opportunity to achieve an old grade B equivalent.

  5. Benefits for students • Broader curriculum offer earlier • Attend lessons with like-minded students who share similar interests • Increased levels of engagement • Best chance of success and opportunities at post-16

  11. Key curriculum points: • All students to take at least one EBacc subject • Appropriate pathway in science decided • Curriculum time per subject/course will alter in Year 9 • New GCSEs/vocational qualifications in all subjects

  14. What is happening this half term? Options Deadline (Wednesday 27th March) Application form goes ‘live’ (Friday 8th March) 1:1 Interviews (w/b 4th March)

  15. Options Form • Applications go ‘live’ Friday 8th March through Varndean Plus • You will first select your EBacc subjects, unless advised differently at interview. (History or Geography then your chosen language which will be what you are studying in Yr 8) • If approved at interview not to take both a humanity and a language, must choose at least one or Computer Science. • Then choose an additional 4 preferences, 2 will be allocated • Must be approved via a tick box, by parent/carer and school

  16. Log-in to Varndean Plus and click on ‘GENERAL’ tab at the top.

  17. Selecting options - 3 tabs will appear (student log-in only) • All courses • Humanities • Languages • Select each one in turn to make all choices

  18. As you select your preferences they will appear on the right under ‘Main’ and ‘Reserve’.

  20. When initially selecting options or making subsequent preferences, this box will appear.

  21. Confirming Options - Parent/carer log-in

  22. Summary: • Choices can only be made in the student log-in area. • There is no need to ‘save’ your preferences, the page will save automatically • They will not be accepted by the school, until they have been approved by parents/carers who will need to do so by logging in themselves. • If you want to change the order you put your preferences in the student must log in and delete and (re)select choices choosing main or reserve as appropriate. • If you have left blank a humanity or a language you will get a warning before exiting….but you can still exit. • Families who do not have access to Varndean Plus will be given paper copies of the form to complete. • After the deadline, Wednesday 27th March 3pm, no further changes can be made.
