Vision into Mandate Back-story NCDPI Response 2008 Framework for Change SBE New Mission “Every public school student will graduate from high school, globally competitive for work and postsecondary education, and prepared for life in the 21st century.” (adopted in 2006) These studies and dialogue were occurring in 2008, prior tothe Race to the Top Grant.

7. New Common Core State Standards &Essential Standards • Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and NC Essential Standards(ES) are for all subject areas – including Guidance Curriculum • Based on Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy • Aligned with ASCA National Standards for Students (National Model)

NC K-12 Guidance Essential Standards: What are they? • “Must Have" goals of the guidance curriculum • Skills, understandings and learning experiences students master at each developmental level progressing to the next level • Focused on higher-order knowledge and skills all students should master - Assurance that every student learns essential content and skills for the 21st Century • Assessed in the classroom via formative, benchmark/interim, and summative assessments to inform of student learning and teaching practices.

Key Discussion Topics from Writing Team and Vetting Feedback NC K-12 Guidance Essential Standards Included: Administrators, school counselors, university educators, & ASCA representative • Desired a student-centered approach – What do we want students to master from these standards in order to be career and college ready? • Stated that standards needed to be clear and relevant • Suggested connections to the ASCA (American Association of School Counselors) model through the ASCA National Standards for Students

Key Discussion Topics from Writing Team and Vetting Feedback • Based standards on ASCA National Standards for Students, 21st Century Skills, Revised Bloom’s Taxonomy to align with other content areas with essential standards and common core standards • Considered school counselors’ actual job duties as related to their job description and the NC Professional School Counseling Standards • Wanted an overarching statement regarding the purpose of the standards and school counselors role as leaders, advocates and facilitators.
