Schwa. Decoding/Phonics 3 rd grade. We found a hundred seashells!. Words with more than one syllable have a syllable that is stressed more than the others. The vowel sound in the unstressed syllable of a two syllable word is usually a schwa sound. The schwa sound is neither long nor short.
