  2. Beatitudes • Most Regard them as: • Maxims to print on calendars • Mottos to hang on the wall • Rules of behavior – Regulation • Panacea for all social ills • Doctrinal Declaration • Jesus’ Declaration of his coming Kingdom

  3. Context of the Beatitudes • (Matt 4:23) “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.” • (Matt 7:28) “And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:” • Sermon on mount – Principles of Kingdom

Preliminary Principles • Jesus came to establish a spiritual Kingdom • (Mark 1:14-15) “Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.”

Preliminary Principles • (Luke 17:20-21) “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.” • Spiritual Reign – No Geographical location

Preliminary Principles • (Mark 9:1) “…Verily I say unto you, That there be some of them that stand here, which shall not taste of death, till they have seen the kingdom of God come with power.” • (Acts 1:8) “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Preliminary Principles • (Luke 5:36-39) “And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.”

  13. “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” • Who are ‘poor in spirit’? • What sense does the kingdom of heaven belong to them? • Humble person? Humility? • One who recognizes that his own knowledge and wisdom could not guide him • Needs guidance • Accepts God’s word

  14. “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” • (Jer 10:23-24) “O Lord, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. O Lord, correct me, but with judgment; not in thine anger, lest thou bring me to nothing.” • (Ps 37:23) “The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way.”

  15. “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” • (Ps 119:116-117) “Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope. Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.” • (Isa 35:8) “And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaringmen, thoughfools, shall not errtherein.”

  16. (1 Cor 2:1-6) “And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:” “Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” • (1 Cor 3:18-19) “Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness.”

  18. “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted” • Mourn about what? How will we be comforted? • Connected to (John 1:29)”…Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” • Mourning over the sinful state of mankind

  19. “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted” • (Matt 11:28-30) “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” • Parallel Verse • Mourn – Comfort • Labor – Rest • Mourn = Labor • Comfort = Rest • Comfort & Rest = Remission of Sins

  21. “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” Illustration: The captain at the helm of a ship in the storm at sea; the wild waves lash against the vessel, but the captain stands at the helm of the ship and guides it steadily through the storm. • Meaning of Meek • “Deficient in spirit and courage: Submissive” • “Not violent or strong: Moderate” • “Enduring injury with patience and without resentment: Mild” • Bible usage of Meek • The ability to endure through injuries or trial with patience

  22. “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” • Meekness of Moses • (Numbers 12:3) “Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the menwhich were upon the face of the earth.” • A man that committed murder • A man that broke the tablets in a fit of anger • A man that burnt the golden idol, ground it up, poured the powder into water and made the people drink it.

And when Moses' father in law saw all that he did to the people, he said, What is this thing that thou doest to the people? why sittest thou thyself alone, and all the people stand by thee from morning unto even? And Moses said unto his father in law,

And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good. Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.”

  27. “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” • Inherit the earth by filling the whole earth with the teaching of Christ • (Isa 11:9-10) “They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain: for the earth shall befullof the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.”

  28. “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth” • Inherit the earth by filling the whole earth with the teaching of Christ • (Habakkuk 2:14) “For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.” • (Matt 24:31) “And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.” • Carried the gospel message to every part of the inhabited earth

  30. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” • Righteousness – Justification • (Rom 1:16-17) “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”

  31. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” • Righteousness – Justification • (Rom 10:3) “For they being ignorant of God'srighteousness, and going about to establish their ownrighteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.” • God’s righteousness is something that God does for man through the gospel

  32. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” • The Gospel reveals how God makes man righteous – How He Justifies Sinners • Two ways a garment can be clean • Never been soiled • Be Washed • Two ways one can be righteous • Innocence – Never sin • Having sins forgiven

  33. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” • (Matt 5:20) “For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdomofheaven.” • Righteousness – Justification

  34. “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” • One must hunger and thirst for it • Not forced on anyone • Not coercive – but persuasive • One must realize his state in sin in comparison with the blessing of salvation • Hungering and thirsting is the inward desire for what the gospel will do • Obeying it brings one into the full measure of pardon and justification

  35. “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” Titus 3:5 He Saved Us “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.” Not By: But By: • Evangelistic Beatitude • All Subjects of God’s mercy – Can’t be saved without it! • We do not withhold this mercy from others • Teach others – Showing mercy • (Titus 3:5) “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;” Works Washing of Regeneration Renewing of the Holy Ghost John 3:5 According to His Mercy

  36. “Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.” • When God saves a person by baptism, who has believed and repented, it is according to his mercy • According to God’s merciful plan • We show mercy when we show others how to be saved by the mercy of God

  37. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” • Not in the sense of Chastity or Virtue • Understanding • (Luke 11:34) “The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eyeissingle, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness.” • (Eph 1:18) “The eyesofyourunderstanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,”

  38. “Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God” • Enlighten heart is one that sees the truth • Knowing heart • Heart of understanding • Pure in heart – A heart that understands, the knowing, the enlightened • Comprehends the truth • Pure in Heart – Hears the truth, obeys it, enters the kingdom, and sees God! • Points to Pentecost – Gospel Preview

  39. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” • Not referring to arbitration • Connects to John’s announcement • (John 1:29) “…Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” • Sins = Mistakes – Transgressions • Sin = The gulf between man and God

  40. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” • (Rom 10:15) “And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!” • Preaching and teaching gospel of Peace • Peacemaker • Taking part in gospel of Peace • Peacemaker

  41. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” • (Eph 2:14-18) “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.”

  42. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” • Take part in this peace – become a child of God • (Gal 3:26-29) “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

  43. “Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.” • Points to Pentecost – (Acts 2:38) • Repent and be baptized • Receive Remission of Sins • Receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost = Gift of being a child of God

  44. “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” • The Test – Is the Kingdom within you? • (Luke 12:53) “The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.”

  45. “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” • The Test – Is the Kingdom within you? • (Matt 10:36-37) “And a man's foes shall be they of his own household. He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”
