  1. Antibacterial Products and Natural Selection

  2. Some background information… • A POPULATION is a group of the same kinds of organisms living in the same area • Examples: The POPULATION of a city is generally regarded as the number of people living in that city. The population of Glastonbury is…. • …about 35,000 people!

  3. More examples of population… • The population of white-tailed deer in Glastonbury would include all of the white-tailed deer in Glastonbury. • The population of E. coli in your intestines is… • ????? (LOTS!!!!)

  4. In any population, there are differences in traits caused by mutations or recombining of genes from egg and sperm cells A MUTATION is a permanent change in the DNA.

  5. Even bacteria can have offspring that are different because of… Mutations Conjugation (sharing of DNA with other bacteria)

  6. Some traits help an organism survive…

  7. …And some have no effect on survival.

  8. Organisms with favorable traits survive… • …and pass those favorable genes along to their offspring.

  9. Over time, more and more organisms have the favorable trait. • The organisms with the favorable trait have EVOLVED by NATURAL SELECTION, and the organisms have adapted to their environment.
