How to Identify Them • Typicality – is it normal or average behavior? • Maladaptivity - does it impair one’s ability to function adequately in everyday life? • Emotional Discomfort – do they have feelings of helpless, hopeless, worthless, guilt, extreme sadness? • Socially Unacceptable Behavior– does it violate social norms?

Psychiatric Hotline • If you are obsessive-compulsive, please press 1 repeatedly. • If you are co-dependent, please ask someone to press 2. • If you have multiple personalities, please press 3, 4, 5, and 6. • If you are paranoid-delusional, we know who you are and what you want.   9. Anxiety • Dread or uneasiness that occurs in response to a vague or imagined danger (not fear) • Trembling, sweating, shortness of breath, light-headedness • Anxiety disorders: Phobias, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, OCD, Stress Disorders

  10. 3 Types of Phobias • Specific Phobia • Excessive or irrational fear of a particular object or situation • When confronted with object or situation, feeling of extreme anxiousness • Agoraphobia • Fear of leaving familiar environment / open places • Social Phobia • Social situations, interactions with strangers

  12. Phobias You’ll Need to Know • Zoophobia – Fear of Animals • Claustrophobia – Fear of enclosed spaces • Acrophobia – Fear of Heights • Arachnophobia – Fear of spiders

  13. Panic Disorder • Recurring and unexpected panic attacks • Common with Agoraphobics • Leads to avoidance behavior

  14. Generalized Anxiety Disorder • Excessive or unrealistic worry about life circumstances that lasts for at least six months • Hard to distinguish from other anxiety disorders

  15. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder • Unwanted thoughts, ideas, or mental images that occur over and over • Practice compulsions (repetitive ritual behaviors) to reduce anxiety
