The Story So Far • Two branches of the royal family fought over the monarchy • Kings came and went with every battle • England was weakened after the civil war • The traditional method of ascending to the monarchy was changed • Kings were made based on the size of their forces as opposed to the strength of their claim

  3. The Battle of Bosworth • When the two rivals for the throne met at the field of Bosworth a great conflict ensued • When Richard III died on the field, Henry VII ascended to the throne • Once again proving that killing the previous monarch and installing ones self as king to be the most efficient method of attaining kingship

  4. Policy of Dynastic Extermination • This practice of violently securing ones place as king continued during Henry VII’s reign • He murdered two rebels who had better claim to the throne • He secured his dynasty through eliminating the legitimate heirs to the throne

  5. How Henry VII became King • Killed Richard III to become king • Won the battle of bosworth because nobles abandoned Richard III • Not because of personal charisma or shrewd statesmanship • Had support of the French Monarch • Married Elizabeth York to unite the houses

  6. HENRY VII • Had a weak claim to the throne and was not the only possible claimant • Did not have ‘Plantagenet’ blood (strong relation to Edward II) • Fled from England • Was raised overseas • Was not a charismatic person
