  3. Colonists hope to avoid break with Britain • Olive Branch Petition- declared loyalty to king, asked to repeal the Intolerable Acts • Green Mountain Boys captured Fort Ticonderoga • Set up Continental Army- 2nd Continental Congress Peace vs. War

  4. Patriots • Fighting for Freedom and Homeland • Owned Rifles • Determined to defend homes and property • George Washington a good leader • Knew the land British • Powerful Army and Navy • Highly trained and experienced • Many colonists supported them Advantages

  5. Patriots • Poorly organized and untrained • Few supplies • Only wanted to fight near homes. • Few willing to enlist for a long period of time • No navy British • 3,000 miles away from home • News and supplies took months • Risked being attacked when they left town Disadvantages
