  2. What is SATA? • It is a cable/wire • To connect this cable you need a SATA port • It connects a hard drive, SSD, or an optical drive to the rest of a computer • SATA cables are much faster than the older EIDE ribbon cables

  3. SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3 • There are 3 generations to this cable/port although there are a total of 6 versions • Every generation the transfer speed is bumped up • SATA 1 released in 2002 and focused on needs for the server and storage segments • SATA 2.0 announced in spring 2003

  4. SATA to USB? • In fact, there are many types of SATA cables/ports out there • You can find certain adapters for example, SATA to USB • Sometimes when working with PC’s you may end up using many types of this cable

  5. What Does SATA Stand For? • It stands for Serial Advanced Technology Attachment

  6. How Does It Work? • This cable lets different optical drives exchange data with the computer through the motherboard • SATA cables are much faster than the older EIDE ribbon cables

  7. SATA Signal Cables • These cables have seven conductors in a flat cable • 2 conductors are for receiving data and 2 are for sending data • There are also ground wires through the cable which reduce interference

SATA Power Cables • These cables have 15 conductors • They supply power to the optical drive at voltage levels of 3.3, 5 and 12 volts • Each voltage has 3 conductors because the wires & connecting pins are too small to handle the full current • 3 ground wires between each 2 voltage wires make up the 15 conductors

  12. Typical Specifications • SATA cables come in various sizes and with different amounts of pins • SATA cable specs do not change by brand; it wither transfers data or not (depending on which generation) • Cables over 1m become degraded and sometimes data is unreadable

  13. Future Trends • A future trend for SATA cables could be faster data transfer rates • They can have a more smaller wire (pins/connectors) • They can also create a new SATA cable that can be much longer than the standard 18” for external use
