How the Natives got here • Scientist believe people first came to the Americas between 14,000 to 25,000 years ago, from Asia. • How did they come across? • They formed vast farming empires of South America to small fishing communities or Eastern North America.. • Though artifacts have been found that date before the ice age. These show that people may have sailed to the Americas.

  6. Native Americans • Native groups in North Carolina were different, they shared many common characteristics. • Small towns based on family ties • Lives revolved around the seasons • Few sought to grow rich. • Lived off the land • Never took more than they needed.

  7. Villages and Chiefs • Land belonged to whoever was using it, not bought and sold • Women worked in fields together and harvest was for all families. • Called “collective society”

  8. Homes • Coast • Built from sticks and covered with woven mats. • Mountains • Built of bark, branches and logs. • Free time they played games, made pots baskets and ornaments.

  9. Coming Together • Larger tribes built places for prayer, celebration and government. • Once a year people gathered to celebrate Green Corn Ceremony. • Danced • Feasted • Celebrated Harvest

  10. Chiefs • Chiefs advised by tribal councils • Chiefdom (towns) • People sent chief corn, deerskin and other goods for protection. • Called Tribute • Chief was expected to return it to the tribe of people who needed it. • Went to war to extend power • Saw Europeans as allies

  11. Spirits • Spiritual World • Plants, animals, landscape • Everything had spiritual meaning. • Ask animals forgiveness before killing it. • Purify themselves to satisfy powerful spirits.

  12. Moved Around • Moved to find food. • Trade • Followed trails, made dugout canoes • Rivers were roads

  13. Oral History • Learned of their world by listening to legends • How to treat others • Where the starts came from • About their past

West African Kingdoms • Believed in spirits • Made a living off the land • Trade • Kingdoms led by wealthy elites, by controlling trade • Europe, India & Asia • Gold, copper, cloth, spices When Europeans became interested in the slave trade, the elites helped them. Made it easy for them to get a large number of enslaved.
