Emma Goldman • June 27th 1869 – May 14th 1940 • Anarchist, known for political activism, writing, and speeches • Played important role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the 20th century • Born in Kovno (Russian Empire), emigrated in1885 to US • Free thinking ‘rebel woman’ • Issues in writings: atheism, freedom of speech, capitalism, free love, marriage, etc.

Cornel West • Born June 2nd 1953 • American philosopher, writer, activist • First African American to graduate from Princeton with PhD in philosophy • Works focus on class, gender, race in American society • Most influential books: Race Matters (1994) and Democracy Matters (2004) • Appears on networks, like CNN, PBS, co-hosted a radio program and several documentaries
