Background 2012 UCLMS Medical Education Conference: homophobia identified as the most frequent form of prejudice among medical students 1/4 patient-facing staff have heard negative comments about LGB people; 1/5 about trans people (Unhealthy Attitudes, Stonewall, 2015) 1/4 LGB staff have experienced bullying or poor treatment from colleagues due to their sexual orientation (Unhealthy Attitudes, Stonewall, 2015)

  3. Aims of initial session • Understand the impact of homophobia and heterosexism • on health • Consider how students and doctors can promote the health and well-being of LGB patients and colleagues

  4. Initial session content Video lecture • Small group work: • Specific healthcare needs of LGB patients • Relevant GMC guidance • Levels of homophobia • Patient case study • LGB student volunteers’ personal examples • Brainstorming: our thinking, our language, our actions

  6. Outcomes: LGBTalk – medical student network • Education • Online resources • Mentoring/ peer support • Socials

  7. Outcomes: Moving towards an LGBT+ inclusive curriculum • Undergraduate teaching: • Half day sessions for year 5 students • Including both sexuality and gender • No lecture • Patient visitors
