  2. Lead-in 1.Who can tell us the title of the debate? The economy or the environment-must we choose? 2.Which one do you choose,economy or environment? Why?

  3. Fast-reading 1.Who are the three speakers? James Long,Lin Shuiqing and Qian Liwei 2.What side does Mr Lin Shuiqing and Mr Qian Liwei each represent? Mr Lin Shuiqing represents the environment and Mr Qian Liwei represents the economy. 3.By how many times has the world’s population increased since 1800? Six times. 4.According to Mr Qian liwei,what should be done to factories that pollute the environment? They should have to pay higher taxes.

  4. Second reading:(Read Lin Shuiqing’s debate and answer the questions) 1.what society does Lin Shuiqing belong to? The society for Environmental Preservation 2.What does Lin Shuiqing start his speech by talking about? Industrial waste 3.What is happening to large amounts of fish? They are being caught by fishing boats before they can lay eggs. 4.What does Lin Shuiqing think we should teach people about? He thinks we should teach people about environmentally friendly ways of living.

  5. Read Qian Liwei’s debate and answer the questions. 1.Why does Qian Liwei think production should not be cut back? Because jobs will be lost.People are more important than fish and trees. 2.What does Qian Liwei say we should produce more of? Recycled products. 3.What does Qian Liwei say we need more of? We need more effective laws to preserve the environment,which still allow the economy to grow. 4.What does Qian Liwei say many people are willing to do? They are willing to pay slightly higher prices for things that are environmentally friendly.

  6. Third reading Fill in the table according to the debate.

  7. Many places have been destroyed.Many plants and animals have died.Factories produce large amounts of poisonous chemicals,the waste of which goes into the air and makes us sick.

  8. Rivers are full of chemicals which flow into the sea and kill sea creatures. Fishing boats catch large numbers of fish without giving them time to lay eggs. The world’s population has grown to more than six times what it was in 1800.The figure is now approaching 6.5 billion people.

  9. People should try to cut back on production and reduce the amount of things they make and buy. It would be beneficial to expand our recycling industry,and teach people about environmentally friendly ways of living.We may even create more jobs and help the economy at the same time.

  10. There are many factories and industries which control the amount of pollution they produce,and are very careful to spend money repairing and the damage they cause.The people running these factories are very concerned about the environment.

  11. If we cut back on the amount of things we produce in order to save the environment,then jobs will be lost.People are more important than fish and trees. We should produce more things from recycled materials,and less from materials taken directly from the environment.

  12. We need more effective laws to preserve the environment,which still allow the economy to grow.This includes more inspections to control how many trees are cut down and how many fish boats can catch. Factories which pollute the environment should have to pay higher taxes.

  13. Reading Strategy:reading a debate What is the order of a debate? One side presents their points first.The other side follows and presents theirs.After that ,there is often a discussion. The order of the debate: Lin Shuiqing presents his points. Qian Liwei presents his points. Open discussion

  14. What is important in a debate? Both sides presenting opposite views present their points clearly. What should we pay attention to when we read or listen to a debate? We should not make a final decision until we have read or listened to both sides completely and understood all the arguments made by each side.

  15. Role play Three groups represent Lin Shuiqing and the other three groups represent Qian Liwei.Each of you speaks one or two points.You can make some changes to the debate and add your opinions to the debate.

  16. Homework: 1.Read the text. 2. Preview the language points in the debate.
