  1. Warm Up: In Africa, a group of young, male, sexually mature elephants were moved away from the main group due to overcrowding in the area. This young group of male elephants had no older elephants around them. Park rangers started find dead white rhinoceroses that did not appear to be killed by humans. They discovered that the young elephants were killing them. Why did this happen? Friday, 3/7

  3. Control Theory • Conformity to social norms depends on the presence of strong bonds between individuals and society. • If those bonds are weak – anomie – deviance occurs. • Social bonds control people. • People conform to avoid losing face.

Basic Elements of Social Bonds • Attachment • Strong attachment – more likely to conform. • Commitment • Greater commitment – more likely to conform • Involvement • Participation in positive social activities – more likely to conform • Belief • Stronger belief in norms and values – more likely to conform. Weak social bonds = increased likelihood of deviance.

Symbolic Interaction & Deviance • Two theories • Differential Association Theory • We learn deviant behavior from those around us. • The more you are exposed to those who break the law, the more likely you are to break it. • If significant others breaks the law, you are more likely to as well. • The younger you are when exposed to deviance, the more likely you will learn it.

  7. Labeling Theory • Explains why deviance is relative; two people commit the same crime, but only one is labeled deviant. • Homework: • Is deviance defined by the act or the individual? • Parenting Teens – who is deviant? • Calling out in class – why do some people get away with it and others are punished? • Physical abuse – is it different depending on who is doing the abuse?
