  3. Course Description: The class will explore various genres of American literature as well as work on grammar mechanics and English language vocabulary expansion. Students will compare and contrast themes selected literary works from various authors, as well as analyzing principal literary movements throughout American history. Students will work on developing their visual and cultural literacy through examination and reflection. The most important aspect of the class will be to help students connect learned material to the real world.

  4. 1st Grading Period Objective: Students will discuss and complete activities based on the summer reading. Students will begin to explore the Realistic period of the early 20th century - a period where authors attempted to pull away from fantasy and define what was "real" during a rapidly industrializing and urbanizing landscape. Students will be reading Mark Twain’s famous American classic, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

  5. English Class Expectations: In order for students to grow in their language skills, they must always practice. This practice comes in many forms: speaking, reading, writing, and even thinking. English is the class subject, English is the language of instruction, therefore students are expected to speak only English in the classroom. Point deductions will be made if a student does not follow this rule.

  6. Grading – Point Distribution Students will be evaluated each grading period based on the following system: CLASSWORK: 30 points HOMEWORK: 20 points TESTS & QUIZZES: 25 points PROJECTS: 25 points _________________________ TOTAL 100 POINTS

  7. Homework Policy: Students will be assigned 3-4 homework assignments per grading period, outside of the assigned readings. Keeping up with class reading is an implied expectation. When a student turns in HW late, a point is deducted for each day. If the point-value reaches zero, students must arrange a time after school to complete the assignment. Further consequences will follow if this is not done.

  8. Class Supply List: Notebook (exclusively for ELA class) Pencil/Pen/Highlighter/Sharpener/Eraser Laptop and charger Reading texts (these will vary each period) Positive attitude and an open mind!

  9. Tardiness Being late to class will not be accepted. If a student is not in his/her seat when the bell rings, that student will be marked as tardy. For each unexcused tardy, a point will be reduced from their conduct grade. All late students must have a school-issued late pass.
