  1. FridayDecember 3, 2010 • (Acids and Salts)

  2. Bell RingerFriday, 12-3-10 Using your Periodic Table and your ion charts, name the ionic chemical compounds: NaCl AlBr3 HCl H2SO4

  3. Announcements We will have a test next Tuesday. The remediation for TEKSCheck #2 is now available, but you must come to me to get clearance to take it.

  4. Acids An acid is a distinct type of compound. Most acids used in the laboratory can be classified as either: binary acids oxyacids

  5. Acids Binary acids are acids that consist of two elements, usually hydrogen and one of the halogens - fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine. HCl HF HI HBr

  6. Acids Oxyacidsare acids that contain hydrogen, oxygen, and a third element (usually a nonmetal). H2SO4 HNO3 H3PO4

  7. Acids Acids were first recognized as a specific class of compounds based on their properties in solutions of water. Consequently, in chemical nomenclature, the term acid usually refers to a solution in water of one of these special compounds rather than to the compound itself. For example, hydrochloric acid refers to a water solution of the molecular compound hydrogen chloride, HCl.

  9. Naming Acids Naming binary acids: Example: HF hydro + fluor + ic Example: HCl hydro + chlor + ic Example: HBr hydro + brom + ic Example: HI hydro + iod+ ic

  10. Naming Acids Naming oxyacids: Example: HNO3 nitr + ic Example: H2SO4 sulfur + ic Example: H3PO4 phosphor + ic

  11. Salts - + - + H Cl Na OH A salt is an ionic compound composed of a cation from a base and the anion from an acid. For example, table salt (NaCl) contains the anion from hydrochloric acid (HCl) and the cation from the base sodium hydroxide (NaOH.) Salts are named in the same way as other ionic compounds.
