  1. Installation of Mags • What details need to be planned out? • Manufacture requirements • IDWR requirements • Site selection for installation • Examples of good and bad installations

  2. Application Considerations • Size? • Piping Configurations? • Meter Mounting or Remote? • Available power supply? • Grounding !!

  3. Details • Electronics • Can be direct mount or remote mounted • Generally have a NEMA 4 (IP 66)or better rating for enclosure and protection of the electronics from dust, and spray down • DC operated verses AC operation • DC operation runs 3-6 years on a battery pack • Hard wired to 110 AC voltage • The use of dry transformers to get voltage down from 480 to 110 • Remote mount • LCD and sunlight • A little care will go a long way

  4. Manufacture requirements • Most require 3 diameters of straight unobstructed pipe above and 2 diameters below. • The meter its self acts as a portion of those lengths due to unobstructed flow through the flow tube • Example- 10 inch diameter meter would require 30 inches upstream of the meter and 20 inches below the meter

  5. Manufacture requirements • Grounding!!! • If stray voltage is present in the system (generally electrically derived not mechanically) the mag sensors will pick up any change in voltage due to strays and give erroneous readings. • Grounding rings are easier to install initially rather than after the fact • Must have grounding rings as part of the installation if: • Meter is installed in PVC • A VFD drive operates the system

  6. Manufacture Requirements • Meter orientation • May have some specific requirements. • Meter must be installed at a 10 or 2 in the pipe • Ask questions if you are unsure of how to proceed.

  7. IDWR Requirements • Clamp on Ultrasonic measurements • Need 10 diameters upstream and 5 downstream to achieve 1% accuracy • The more straight run of unobstructed pipe the better

  8. Site Selection

  9. Good installations

  10. Good installations

  11. Good installations

  12. Not so good installations

  13. Not so good installations

  14. Not so good installations

  15. Wrap up • Measurement plans for each well will help to insure installation is done right the first time • If you have questions ask someone • Accurate measurements begin with a good meters and better installation • Water users are ultimately responsible for install and maintenance of flow meters
