This fact file provides 7th-grade students with an essential guide to acids and alkalis, focusing on their identification through the pH scale, measuring strength, and distinguishing their properties. Students will learn about neutralization reactions, exemplified by classic reactions such as HCl with NaOH, leading to the formation of salt and water. The document outlines properties of acids and alkalis, practical daily applications like cleaning teeth and treating indigestion, and the significance of pH levels, cementing the role of these substances in everyday life.

D.A.PUBLIC SCHOOL (O & A LEVELS) 7TH GRADE SCIENCE FACT FILE Acids and Alkalis Ms. Ayesha Shafiq 3rd JUNE 2011
Objectives • To learn how acids and alkalis can be identified and distinguished with pH scale. • Measuring the strength of acids and alkalis • Distinguish acid and alkalis with respect to their properties • To neutralize acids and alkalis
Learning outcomes • Describe the pH scale • Explain the difference between strength and concentration of acids and alkalis • Identify some daily use of Alkali • Explain neutralization • Recall the properties • Use of pH meter
Properties of Acids • Produces H+ ions in water • Taste sour • Corrode metals • Good Electrolyte • React with bases to form salt and water • pH is less than 7 • Turns blue litmus paper to red
Properties of Alkalis • Generally produces OH- ions in water • Taste bitter, chalky • Are electrolyte • Feel soapy, slippery • React with acids to form salt and water • pH greater than 7 • Turns red litmus paper
Neutralization reaction • A salt is the product of neutralization reaction • The anion comes from the acids and the cation from the base. • EXAMPLE: Hcl + NaOHNaCl+ H2O NaCl is a natural salt.
Conclusion • Use in our daily life as cleaning your teeth • Curing for indigestion • Wasp sting use of vinegar • Fizzy drinks Neutralization reaction plays very important role in our daily life. There are 2 types of substances acidic and basic reacting with each other forming salt by cancelling the effect of each other.
