Protestant Church (Martin Luther) • Martin Luther, a German Augustinian monk, posted 95 theses on a church door • display his displeasure with the Church's indulgences (cancellation of punishment due to sins which have already been forgiven) "As soon as a coin in the coffer rings, a soul from purgatory springs".

  3. Church of England/Anglican Church (King Henry VIII) • King in charge not Pope • King Henry VIII started the Church of England because he was protesting against the Pope, who would not let him get a divorce.

  4. Church of England/Anglican Church (King Henry VIII) • Similar to the Roman Catholic Church except the King in charge not Pope • King Henry VIII wanted a divorce and the Pope would not give it to him. • As a result he created his own church.

  5. Pilgrims (Separatists) • wanted to separate from the Church of England • believed everyone talked directly to God

Puritans • wanted to “purify” the Church of England • simpler form of worship • No organ music • No finely decorated churches • No special clothing for Priests • Many well educated and had money • the clothes they should wear, the length of their hair, their labors and pastimes, were all supervised and regulated • Lived in mainly Massachusetts

(Monotheistic) • They believed the Church was abusing its power. • They are all Protestant Christians • The Pilgrims, Puritans, and Quakers all were forced to leave England and go to America. • The Puritans were involved in the Salem Witch Trials of 1693. • The Pilgrims, Puritans, and Quakers were forced to leave England because the Anglican Church was the official church of England and the others were not. They were not tolerated in England.
