  1. Qualitative Observations • What are the 5 senses?

  2. Write 3 qualitative observations about the following picture...

  3. Quantitative Observations • Usually utilize a measuring instrument and include a numerical value...

  4. Name this instrument... • Graduated cylinder • Measures the volume of a liquid • Measured in units of mL • Volume is the amount of space that something occupies • This curve formed at the top of the liquid is called the meniscus • You read the bottom of the meniscus when recording the volume.

  5. Name this instrument… • Ruler • Measures the length of an object • We use the metric system in science (the universal language) • Units – meters, cm, mm

  6. Name this instrument... • Triple-beam balance • Measures the mass of an object • Measured in units of grams • Mass is the amount of matter something contains • Mass is not the same as weight!!!

  7. Name this instrument... • Thermometer • Measures the temperature of an object • Temperature is measured in degrees Celsius, or in Kelvin • No Farenheit • Temperature is a measure of how quickly the particles inside the object are moving • The faster the particles move, the higher the temperature
