2. Our Goals: • Learn some basic high school terminology. • Briefly explain graduation requirements and end of course exams. • Focus on your freshman schedule and classes available.

3. Terms you will hear at HS What is a Credit? One credit=1 full year class One half credit= one semester class To earn credit: Semester average must be 70 or higher Must be in attendance 90% of the time—Absences can cause you to lose credit no matter what your grade is! GPA? (Grade Point Average) It is calculated once a year and determines your class rank based off of your grades. You receive an extra 10 points on a grade in Advanced/AP ONLY in the GPA calculation. You will never SEE the ten points on anything.

4. HS Terms • Transcript- this is the record of all four years of high school. • Very important document • Scholarships • College acceptance • Job applications • Stays with you for life • What you do your freshman year NEVER goes away! Start high school making good choices!

5. HS Terms • House Bill Five Graduation Plan- refers to the foundation graduation plan plus endorsements you will be following. You will hear staff refer to this OFTEN! • Endorsement • This is what we call a group of 4 or more classes that focus on a specific career “area” or “pathway” or “interest”. Classes that support what you want to do when you grow up.

6. Steps to graduation 1. Follow the foundation graduation plan plus endorsement that has you earn 26 specific credits. Make sure 4 or more classes support your endorsements (what you are interested in possibly doing when you grow up). • Pass 5 end-of-course exams. English 1, English 2, Biology, Algebra 1, US History

7. Step one • Follow the checklist for the foundation graduation plus endorsement requirements: Four or more classes will support your interest!

8. Let’s just look at the freshman year only • A TYPICAL FRESHMAN SCHEDULE • English • Math • Science • Spanish 1 • Social Studies/Fine Arts/ PE or Athletic • Elective/Fine Art/PE or Athletic • Fine Art/PE or Athletic

9. Before planning classes THINK ABOUT Advanced VS. Regular • Please think through this carefully!! • Advanced course work is challenging and will require extra time and dedication beyond the regular school day. Expect daily homework. • What are your strengths? Go with what you like the most! • Advanced classes require you to have a 90 or above in the preceding regular class or 80 or above in a preceding advanced class. • One chance to exit at the six week mark if you are struggling. • PARENTS and STUDENT must sign an oath acknowledging that they understand that they are signing up for a rigorous course(s), and they understand that students are in there for the entire first six weeks. At the six week mark, if a student is academically struggling, they may be allowed to exit.

11. Choose a MATH • Algebra 1 • Geometry (if you took Alg 1 this year) • Advanced Geometry (if you took Alg 1 this year)

12. Choose a SCIENCE • IPC (Integrated Physics and Chemistry) • Advanced IPC (if you took BIO in 8th) • Biology • Advanced Biology

13. Choose a HISTORY or (PE or fine art) • History is not “required” as a freshman, BUT.... • If you want to take AP World History your sophomore year, then you must take Advanced World History this year!!! This class is wonderful for preparing you for college course work in the future. • Otherwise……. • You may fill this space in with another requirement. (fine art/PE)

14. Choose a PE • PE classes • Athletics-First two weeks are try outs. If you are cut then automatically placed in PE. Have physical done BEFORE school starts! • Cheer, Dance, New Image, Colorguard- tryouts are usually done before the end of this year.

15. Choose a Fine Art or Foreign Language • Spanish 1- (online French and German available- you must be independent and willing to speak aloud in front of peers on a daily basis. The work is much more rigorous) • Spanish 2- if passed a Spanish 1 credit by exam in 8th. • Art 1 • Art 2 (if have HS credit for Art 1 from 7th /8th) • Theatre Arts • Band 1 • Jazz Band 1 (must also be in band) • Beginning Piano • Choir 1

16. Choose an elective to match your endorsement (interest) • STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) • If you have completed Alg 1, then you are on track for Math STEM. • If you have completed Biology, then you are on track for Science STEM. • If taking Alg 1 or Bio , at some point, you will have to take double math or science. We recommend the sophomore year.

17. Choose an elective to match your endorsement (interest) • Business and Industry • Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources • Principles of Ag, Food, and Natural Resources • Business, Marketing and Finance • Principles of Business, Marketing, and Finance • Information and Technology Applications • Business Information Management • Principles of Art, Audio, and Video Tech and Communications • DIM Digital interactive Media (only if you had PIT in 8th) • Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics • Introduction to Aircraft Technology (application process)

20. Is that it??? • For now, we are only focusing on your freshman year. • The PLAN….. • In the fall of next year counselors will make six year plans with students. • In the spring of next year, a counselor will meet with EACH student AND their parent to go over details of their graduation plan with endorsement.

21. What do you do now? • You will be given a Freshman Course selection sheet. • Take the sheet home to your parents today. • Follow the directions on the sheet! • If choosing advanced classes, you must sign the oath located on the back! • Remind parents about the parent meeting happening this Monday at 6:00pm in the High School Cafeteria. • Sheets due Thursday, April 18th!! Turn them in to Mrs. Rollins or your English teacher.
