Year 12 Speeches…. Confidence is the key!. Choosing a topic…. Things to think about: what is the purpose of the speech task? what are the requirements of the speech task? who is the audience and what will they be interested in? what am I interested in and have knowledge or experience of?.

  1. Year 12 Speeches… Confidence is the key!

  2. Choosing a topic… Things to think about: • what is the purpose of the speech task? • what are the requirements of the speech task? • who is the audience and what will they be interested in? • what am I interested in and have knowledge or experience of?

  3. So…what happens when I’m stuck for a topic? Here are some ideas: • We watch too much violence • A real problem in society is…and how I would solve it • How to get equality back into NZ society • Justice should be based on ‘an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth’ philosophy • We are a binge drinking society

  4. More… • Parents have the right to smack their children • Boy racers need to be abolished • The drinking/driving age should be increased • Education needs to be more relevant/practical • Winning is the most important thing

  5. More… • We are obsessed with material possessions • Being popular is the most important thing • Fair play has ruined sport • English is the most important subject (hehe!) • Parents should let their teenagers make their own decisions, and mistakes • Democracy is dying • Education begins after school

  6. More… • Euthanasia should be legalised • Exams prove nothing worth proving • Life wasn’t meant to be easy for the youth of today • Love is a myth • Money makes the world go round • Sport has become an obsession • The media abuse their power

  7. More… • Beauty will get you further than brains • It’s not what you know, it’s who you know • Art is nonsense • Barbie should be banned • Beauty is skin deep • Clothes make the person • Co-education is better than single sex education • Competition is a good thing

  8. Next step…draft of your speech You wouldn’t build a house without a plan now would you? • To meet the standard, content, structure, and language must be appropriate for your purpose, which is to give a persuasive speech to your class.

  9. And I would structure this speech how? Use the same approach you would use when writing an essay… • A brief introduction • Several key comments on the topic, supported with evidence • A brief conclusion • Remember to keep it interesting!

  10. And what am I being marked on? • Content – is it at the right level? Is it an interesting topic? Is it persuasive? • Use of voice: use of pitch, pace, tone, variation in volume, stress or emphasis, pause, rhythm. • Body/audiovisual: use of gesture facial expression, stance, eye contact, movement etc. AND use of visual aids: posters, OHT, powerpoint or other examples.

  11. Once you have put the speech together… • Annotate your speech using a margin down each side. Label one side ‘language techniques’ and one side ‘delivery techniques. • Look at the exemplars for some ideas!
