  2. What are Politics? • “The activities involved in getting and using power in public life, and being able to influence decisions that affect a country or society” –Oxford Dictionary

  3. The Political Spectrum • Traditionally, the political spectrum is constructed in the following way:

  4. History of this model: • The left to right spectrum was based on the seating arrangements of the French National Assembly in 1789. • Supporters of the King sat on the right. • Supporters of the Revolutionaries sat on the left.

  5. Why is this inadequate? • Simply put, this model only addresses economic positions in regard to government. • Why is this a problem? • Some newer models incorporate social aspects as well as economic.

  6. Some Examples… • Hitler would fall to the right because of his unwavering commitment to state control. He placed government control and strength above individual rights and freedoms. • Stalin would fall to the left because of his resolution to eliminate capitalism, idealising (in theory) the individual and Communist ideals.

  7. Major Issues in the Spectrum • Form of Government • Involvement of Government in personal, affairs (personal liberty). • Regulation of the Economy (economic liberty). • Role of the church • Urban vs. Rural • Foreign Policy vs. Isolationism • Political Violence (pacifism vs. militancy) • Foreign Trade • Diversity (multiculturalism vs. nationalism) • Progress (radicals vs. conservatives)

Where do you Fall? • Go to www.politicalcompass.org and take the test. • When you have completed it, record where you fall and write a well organized paragraph explaining your position. • You may find words you don’t understand, so make sure you look them up and do what is necessary to make sense of the information.
