  7. 6) We’re Readers and Writers • Building Readers • Learning different genres • Building reading stamina • Reader’s Theater • Guided Reading Groups • Building Writers • Writing for a purpose • Writing to persuade • Technical writing and research

  8. 5) Homework- Make it Family Time • Have a certain homework PLACE • Have a certain homework TIME • Make it quiet (no music or TV) • Be interested – make it family study time • Check & sign the Planner EVERY NIGHT • Check the Homework section of the binder • Set a timer and take breaks • Make it fun and positive!

  9. 5) Homework- every day • 30 minutes of reading every night- 5-7 days a week • Reading MEANS: • Reading a book with your child • Your child reading quietly • Telling a story about you or your family (in ANY language • After reading write in WRJ, 2 pages = 2 sentence • Just Right Books based on the STAR testing • Accelerated Reading (AR) • 15 minutes of writing every night- 5-7 days a week • Writing MEANS: • Writing a story together • Reading and Editing their writing • Providing necessary materials to write with

  10. 5) Other Homework • Math 20-30 minutes daily • Homework worksheets from class • Practice Rocket Math tests (basic facts) • Make it fun! • Social Studies and Science Projects • Look for project direction and due dates • Band, Orchestra and Choir practice

  12. 3) 6th Grade Leaders • The right challenge for each child • GOAL- No frustration breakdowns and no major boredom • We help children build friendships and community • We build on each child’s strengths • We want your child to have an amazing year! • We want them ready for Middle School • They read Morning announcements to school • They help Second Grade with reading

  13. 2) Notice the Good Things • Positive reinforcement is FAR more effective than negative reinforcement • We catch kids doing the right thing – high 5s, red tickets, and two thumbs up • Kids know what to do - We’re clear with our expectations • We learn from mistakes • A problem? You’ll hear from me by phone calls or pink forms to sign • #1 rule- RESPECT

  14. 1) We Love 6th Graders Because! • Know that “things are NOT fair,” • 6th Grade drama, • Growth spurts, • Get their humor and “Jokes,” • Have heard all the excuses or reasons, • Are willing to dress in camo at camp!
