University Card • Oxford University identity card • Sign the back NOW • Carry it with you at all times • Used to access all OUCS Services, libraries, departments, College facilities • If lost report immediately to College Office/Porters/College IT Dept/Library • Lost cards incur a £10 replacement fee

OUCS Services • Backbone network, mail, web, UNIX servers • Your department or College’s network is run by dept/college staff and we cannot set up a connection to it for you at OUCS • Remote Access services (VPN & Eduroam) • File backup and archive (not available to undergraduates) • Helpcentre • IT teaching • WebLearn • Hardware breakdown service - special rates • Online shop: software, licences & services • Poster printing (up to A0 and a little beyond)

  5. Who can use OUCS Services? • Undergraduates • Postgraduates • University and college staff • Academic visitors Most OUCS facilities and services are free to members of Oxford University

Activating your Oxford account • When your University Card was issued … • OUCS created your Oxford account ... • and sent you an email containing your ACTIVATION CODE • Just follow the instructions and your account should be working within minutes … https://webauth.ox.ac.uk • Your Oxford account gives you access to email and many other services • including the self-service Oxford Student System

Email at Oxford • Use your University account for ALL University correspondence • Email addresses can be looked up via the web: • http://www.ox.ac.uk/contact • or use the Global Address List within Exchange • Obey the University’s rules for computer use • DO NOT disclose your password to anyone • Basic SPAM filtering available through the OUCS registration pages – please use it! • This is set to medium by default, so watch your Junk folder • You get a 2Gb email quota on Nexus

Email Addresses • All new students and staff have an e-mail address and account created when their University Card is issued • University email address: • first.last@coll-or-dept.ox.ac.uk • Graduates generally have addresses for department and college. Normally both go to the same Oxford account but … • Some departments still run their own email servers

Reading Email • Main University mail service is called Nexus • OWA (Outlook Web Access) is the web face of Nexus • https://nexus.ox.ac.uk • Can read e-mail using an e-mail client • Outlook, Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Opera • need the client installed & configured on your computer • Configuration instructions for these and more at http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/email/config/ • Many colleges insist on undergraduates reading email daily during full term • If you don’t read your Nexus e-mail regularly please forward it to an account that you do read regularly

  12. Webauth/SSO login • The webauth or SSO (Single Sign-On) login screen is used for most services other than Nexus

  13. OUCS Registration • Login: • Set, update or view Nexus mailbox settings • SPAM filter settings • Email forwarding • Email usage and quota

Connecting to the network • College or department specifics • Local connections, run by college or department • OUCS cannot set up a connection to a College or Department network for you as we do not run the network inside the college or department • You must: • have anti-virus software installed and kept up to date (Sophos is free to all members of the University) • keep your OS updated (e.g. Windows Update) • Wireless network connections • OWL (Oxford Wireless LAN) • Eduroam

Network usage • Peer-to-peer file sharing (e.g. BitTorrent, LimeWire) is frowned upon and may be forbidden by your college or department • Non-permitted P2P activity may result in disconnection or a fine or even a visit to the Proctors • Skype is ok as long as you set it up as specified on the OUCS pages: • http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/network/voip/skype.xml • Oxford backbone and JANET AUP • Email software

Remote Access Remote Access uses a separate password, NOT your SSO password • VPN service • http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/network/vpn/ • Use for access to Oxford-only resources if your computer is not directly connected to the OU network. e.g. on a commercial broadband service or via Eduroam (below). • Needed for OXAM and some other services. • Also needed to use OWL, the Oxford Wireless LAN • Eduroam service • http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/network/wireless/services/eduroam/ • An international federation of academic institutions which allows its users to visit other organizations and obtain WiFi access using the same username and password as they would use at their home institution. • NB you may need to use VPN over Eduroam for access to some services

Personal Web Space • Each user is allowed 15MB of web space • Activate it on https://register.oucs.ox.ac.uk/accman/web(‘Manage web space’ in OUCS Registration login) • Access using Oxford username and password • Use SCP, SFTP (unsecured FTP is not permitted) to place files on web space • Need to use “makeweblinks” command on linux server for SCP connection • Details on OUCS web sitehttp://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/web/intro/index.xml • May not be used for commercial purposes or to bring the University into disrepute

What can go wrong? • Computer virus? • protect your computer • software & regular updates available from OUCS • http://www.oucs.ox.ac.uk/viruses/ • Keep machines up to date! • Windows Update • Corrupt/lost files? - Take regular backups • No space for new email? - delete unwanted messages - watch for big attachments • Forgotten password for: • Nexus/SSO? - reset it using your security question • College/dept. network? - see College/dept. IT Staff

OUCS don’t control those so can’t help – see college or department IT Staff

OUCS Helpcentre Services • Bring your University Card • No card == No access • Computers – Mac and PC • Lots of applications including office, web, email etc. • Need an Helpcentre account (self-register from anywhere) • B&W and Colour Printing (using prepayment card) • Photocopying, scanning including 35mm slides • CD-Writing • Flash memory cards (CF, SD, MS, SM) • ZIP & 3.5” floppy disk drives available • Video editing • PC consultancy appointments • Only after initial consultation with helpdesk

Hardware Breakdown Service • Useful and cheap breakdown cover for your desktop, laptop, printer, or iPod • iPod cover includes accidental damage • For students registering a computer on breakdown cover for the first time, there is a 50% discount.   25. The HFS (Hierarchical File Server) • Backup and long-term archive services • Automated (robotic) tape library • Available to staff and postgrads only • Scheduled and on-demand (24x7) backup • Three copies of your data are made • One copy stored outside oxford • Protect your data
