  2. The Circulatory System (4 min) • *Student Learning Target: I can identify the general function and major organs of the circulatory system. I can explain how the circulatory system helps to maintain the homeostasis of the organism. • *Aim: How does the circulatory system help us to maintain homeostasis?

  3. What is it for? • What does our circulatory system do?

  4. Circulatory System* (3 min) • Circulatory System – def: organ system that is responsible of the delivery of materials throughout the body • Includes: • Blood/blood vessels • Lymph/lymph vessels • Heart

  5. Blood* (4 min) • Blood – a tissue composed of: • Plasma –helps blood transport • Red blood cells – round, disk shaped cells containing hemoglobin (iron molecule that carries oxygen) • White blood cells – produced in lymph tissue and bone marrow, fight infections • Platelets – involved in blood clotting

  6. Blood Vessels* (4 min) • Arteries – carry blood away from the heart • Thick elastic artery walls • Aorta – largest artery in body • Capillaries – connect arteries to veins, area of nutrient/gas exchange between blood and body cells • Thin walls • Veins – carry blood back to heart • Thin walls, one way valves Pulmonary – having to do with the lungs
