  2. Music - overview • Most music printed = religious songs • More instruments • Piano became increasingly popular • reflection of the European music

Religious music • famous religious songs : Amazing Grace and Coronation • Hymn singing –camp meeting • Music groups • Was popular in the early 1800s • remained popular during the 1830s because slavery still existed during this time and slaves and African Americans used singing as means of work communications and to escape from their hardship

  4. Instruments • First orchestra in 1809 – Harvard College orchestra • Fiddle playing • drums, xylophone, and banjo were introduced • Development of keys enabled a wider range of instruments, and brass instruments started showing up in the 1820s. ex. Trumpet and saxhorn

  5. Piano • Piano grew in popularity during the Enlightenment period • gathered around the piano and sang humorous or sentimental songs • By the mid 1800s, women were expected to be able to play piano

  6. Theaters and Operas

  7. Theater and plays • Shakespeare and other popular melodramas were performed in cities from October to June every year • Minstrel shows - popular especially during the 1850s

  9. Operas • Opera singing- popular in the early 1800s • Jenny Lind –opera singer

  10. Dance • African American slaves were taught to play the fiddle and the Whites danced to minuets, reels, and jigs. Quickstep and polka were popular dances during the 1840s.

Other entertainments • Walking • Checkers and chess • Horse racing • Circus menagerie and horse shows • Picnics – became popular in the 1850s • Lottery • Card playing • Rowing races • Sports became popular – football (mid-1800s) • Birthday parties for children – wealthy families only * However, starting at mid 1800s, pastimes started being thought of as wasteful because everyone was working hard
