The Fundamental Question “Why are academically prepared girls not considering or enrolling in engineering degree programs?” We know the issue is not one of ability or preparation. 94% of girls and 91% of boys take biology, 64% of girls and 57% of boys take chemistry, 26% of girls and 32% of boys take physics, 64% of girls and 60% of boys take algebra II. k e l l r o b o t i c s

  5. The Problem of Perception ? We believe that the problem is one of perception. Girls and the people who influence them: teachers school counselors parents peers the media Do not understand what a career in engineering looks like and therefore don’t consider it as a career option. k e l l r o b o t i c s

Key Questions of the EWE Project • What do high school women think about engineering? • They do not have an understanding of what engineering is. • They do not think it is “for someone like me.” • High school girls believe engineering is for people who love both math and science. • What is the word association of “engineering” for high school women? • smart, really smart, problem-solving, design, nerdy, math • building, hard, complex, men, cars, engines, don’t know, science • trains, bridges, Dilbert, math, too difficult, science, machines, boring, boys. k e l l r o b o t i c s

Key Questions of the EWE Project • How interested are women in becoming an engineer? • Less than 10% were interested • 70 % actively disinterested • But 25 % would consider it if they had a clue as to what an engineer did • Is there a gender divide in engineering? • The common understanding among all audiences is that engineering is perceived to be a man’s profession and there is little to no encouragement for girls to consider engineering. • Most girls were neither surprised nor dismayed by this divide. k e l l r o b o t i c s

Key Questions of the EWE Project • Who are the career influencers for high school women? • Parents • Friends / Peers (close 2nd) • Teachers / Siblings • School Counselors / Professionals • What do the career influencers say about engineering? • Career influencers, including educators, are not familiar with how to guide students toward engineering. • The positive stories about engineering are not being told to this audience. • “Search the Internet, talk to people in the field.” k e l l r o b o t i c s

Key Questions of the EWE Project • What messages are the engineering community sending to high school students? • Current messages portray engineering as challenging and stress math and science abilities. • The answers are often task oriented resumes • Messages do not include the benefits and rewards of being an engineer. • These messages are not relevant for the high school audience. • What messages about engineering will resonate with high school students? • Informational stories that told them more about what the engineering profession entails • Positive personal stories that related engineering to the lifestyle that they are hoping to obtain k e l l r o b o t i c s

  11. Career Influencers Educators Most educators do not feel prepared to guide students towards engineering. Peers Unless parents are in science field, they are not likely role models for engineering. Social perception of engineering is negative. k e l l r o b o t i c s

  13. Strategic Recommendations Teach the engineering community how to communicate to non-engineering audiences. Identify, Develop and test messages that illustrate engineering as a career that complements and supports community, family, and self-interests. Create training opportunities and resources materials for school counselors and teachers. k e l l r o b o t i c s
