  3. An Overview – The Leadership Journey What a privilege to embark on a journey to guide, mentor and nurture youth leadership through sport and recreation environments.

  4. The Journey • This youth leadership programme is designed to nurture and grow leadership potential, primarily through sport and recreation contexts • The journey is one of leading the leaders, who are also followers, and leading the followers, who are also leaders

  6. What is Leadership? Leadership is a combination of character and competence; of who you are and what you can do. (Covey, 2004)

Leadership in a Nutshell • Leadership is paramount wherever people are involved • The sport and recreation environment can be a powerful place for participants to learn about leadership • Leadership begins with self-knowledge • Self-knowledge includes the young person understanding their abilities and qualities, including their leader qualities

Leadership in a Nutshell • Current leadership practices use a participant-centred approach, which encourages ownership and empowerment • Leaders are measured by how they behave and what they do rather than what they say they will do • Leaders create change and learning involves adapting to change • A successful leader has high expectations of themselves

  10. Leaders in a Nutshell Most leadership definitions, descriptions and stories use similar words: Influence Situational Power Balance Transformational Character Charisma Mentoring Integrity

Growing Leaders Philosophy The philosophy is based on four cornerstones: • The belief that leadership experiences enhance the development of all young people • An understanding that leadership begins with self-knowledge • The belief that many leadership characteristics and traits can be developed • An understanding that leadership is an act of service

  12. Who is this Programme for? Growing Leaders may be used in many contexts such as: • Schools - Sport and recreation outside the classroom - Sport and recreation in the classroom • Sports clubs and sport organisations • Recreation clubs and groups • Church groups • Youth groups e.g. Scout leader • Other contexts in which youth are involved

  13. Programme Values Growing Leaders is based on four values. These values are: • Young person-centred • Connected – Community • Long-term approach • Access and Inclusion What do these values mean for you?

Building a Leadership Programme Step 1 Become familiar with the Growing Leaders resources Step 2 Identify the needs and interests of the young people for whom you are building the programme Step 3Decide where, when and in what context you deliver the Growing Leaders content Step 4 Select the appropriate Growing Leaders stage Step 5 Select the learning activities or design your own Step 6 Decide the order of the learning activities
