In The Global Achievement Gap, Tony Wagner identifies these 7 skills: • CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING • COLLABORATION ACROSS NETWORKS AND LEADING BY INFLUENCE • AGILITY AND ADAPTABILITY • INITIATIVE AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP • EFFECTIVE ORAL AND WRITTEN COMMUNICATION • ACCESSING AND ANALYZING INFORMATION • CURIOSITY AND IMAGINATION

  3. Learning in the IB Turning Knowledge into Action “IB learners act at home, as well as in classrooms, schools, communities and the broader world. Action involves learning by doing….” From What is an IB Education? • How will you use what you are learning to have a positive impact in your home, school, community, etc.?

  4. The Personal Project “The personal project is an opportunity to develop their known strengths and discover new ones. It allows them to explore the extent to which they are developing the attributes of the IB learner profile and becoming lifelong learners….” MYP Personal project guide 2011, “Introduction to MYP personal project” pg2

  5. What is the Personal Project? • Personal and creative work initiated and developed by the student. • Student-directed inquiry aimed at developing the skills necessary to be independent, lifelong learners • Differentiated learning opportunity that allows for expression according to students’ individual needs • Students: • Generate ideas • Plan steps for completion • Determine specifications to assess whether the goal has been achieved

  6. Consists of three components: • The process journal • The messy thinking • Documentation of resources • The product/outcome • The reporting of the project • Addresses all of the objectives • Does not have to be written • If written, it is a 1500 to 3500 word report • If it is not written, it must be accompanied by a short explanation (150 words) • Structured in the same way as the objectives and criteria

  7. Picking the Topic Brainstorm • Something that you’ve always wanted to learn • Major issues facing your community • What are they and how can you address them? • I would like to construct, compose, improve… Don’t forget – this is YOUR project. If you choose something that you’re genuinely interested in, you will be more successful with it!

  8. Why should I do a personal project? • The personal project is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate college and career skills in college applications and job interviews! • You must complete a project if you want to be in the IB Diploma Programme. • It is great opportunity for you to explore a topic you love and have always wanted to know more about!

  9. If you are interested in completing a personal project or being a part of the IB Diploma Programme in 11th grade… • Please see Mrs. Heyman, Mr. Foxmann, or Ms. Klimes in the IB office or the IB Lounge during lunch • E-mail Mrs. Heyman at jheyman@aacps.org • Look at the personal project webpage on oldmillhs.org
