  1. News from Room 17 May 11, 2007 SCIENCE READING We just finished our second science module called “Changes.” We focused on chemical and physical reactions, separating mixtures and solutions, and the states of matter. The students loved the hands-on activities, and most of them enjoyed and benefited from our new journaling approach in science. Don’t forget to visit the LGI on May 17th between 6 and 7 to experience “science in action” at our science showcase! We just started our second to last story in the anthology this week! Can you believe the school year is almost over?! We just finished a mini-unit on homographs, and the students have been working in small group learning centers to review concepts we covered this year. We are continuing in our small group reading, and some groups have even started literature circles. Look for more papers/assignments to come home over the next week or two. We will be creating memory books in the class which will incorporate all of our language arts skills. It should be a blast! WRITING We just completed a writing activity that was involved and exciting for the kids (It’s a surprise!). This activity created a great opportunity to introduce quotations. They class did surprisingly well. Their final published products were wonderful. I was amazed, as I’m sure you will be. In the last few weeks, we will be reviewing letter writing, and we will be writing a small paragraph to one another complimenting each other. MATH We are currently working on our second to last chapter in math! We have covered numerous topics this year such as, addition and subtraction with regrouping, fractions, measurement, greater than and less than, time, money, and some probability. I am impressed with the ability of the students to move through the chapters so quickly. We are also working on “math to a T” problems, which is preparation for the PSSA-type problems the students will experience next year. We will continue to take the Math Masters timed tests. Please continue to study at home with your child. They need to be through subtraction by the end of the year!
