  3. Where to look • Insects can be found in trees, flowers, crops, gardens, in the water, under rocks and leaves and many other places. • Look for signs of insects like leaf discoloration or signs of chewed leaves. • Many flying insects can be found around flowers and at night with light traps. • Certain insects can be found on specific plants.

  4. What you need When collecting insects you need certain items: • Insect trap, aspirator or net • Jars or bags to put insects in • Killing Jar Recommended: • Gloves • Wear pants and closed toed shoes • Magnifying glass

  5. Different Collecting Techniques • Nets • Pit Traps • Catch Tray • Aspirator • Light Traps • Drip Net

  6. Insect Net • Insect nets can be made or bought. • Usually made out of mesh or canvas material. • Used in the field or trees • A sweeping motion back and forth across the field is used to collect insects.

  7. Pit Traps • Will catch many ground beetles and other insects that live on or in the soil. • It consists of a trap can that is buried in the soil, level with the rim so that insects attracted to it will fall in and can’t get out. • Use pieces of spoiled fruit, vegetables, excrement or meat. • Make sure you remove the insects that you catch every morning.

  8. Catch Tray • A tray made from white fabric and a sturdy frame. • Allows insects shaken from trees and foliage to be seen.

  9. Aspirator • Used for small insects that can’t be collected with nets or hands • Like an insect vacuum. • Insects are sucked into a jar. • Mesh is used to prevent insects being inhaled by user.

  10. Light Traps • Different light sources can be used. • Different insects are attracted to different types of light. • UV, Incandescent and halogen are usually used. • White sheets are for insects to land on and be seen.

  11. Drip Nets • Used to collect aquatic insects. • Fine mesh allows water to flow through but not insects. • Similar to a fish net.

  12. Killing Jar • Killing Jar is used to humanely kill the insects you have collected. • Insects may also be frozen. • Refer to the JOS on how to create your killing jar.

  13. Design! Design your own device for capturing insects using the supplies given If you would like to use additional supplies then ask Ms. Masters Once you have completed your design then get Ms. Masters to check it off and then you may begin building
