PRIDE’s Beginning • The PRIDE initiative was launched in the summer of 1997 by U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers and the late James Bickford, former Secretary of the Kentucky Natural Resources Cabinet • Organized as a grassroots effort to encourage citizens to take personal responsibility for protecting their environment Congressman Hal Rogers Secretary James Bickford

The Organization • Eastern Kentucky PRIDE, Inc., was formed as a nonprofit organization to coordinate the initiative and operate grant programs to fund local efforts to accomplish the PRIDE goals. • Volunteers, schools, local governments and other nonprofit organizations do the work. • PRIDE is funded by a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

  11. PRIDE Report CardFall 2005 • Disposed of 863,440 waste tires • Removed 2,228 illegal dumps • Cleaned 398 stream sites • Disposed of 152,296 appliances • Collected 380,198 bags of trash • Cleaned 15,665 road miles • 156,441 volunteers worked 496,058 hours

Environmental Education Report Card • 676 grants awarded for $2.8 million • 284 outdoor classrooms built • 70 greenhouses built • 40 nature trails built • 27 school recycling projects started • 20,000 students & 445 educators trained thru Project Clean Streams • 21 Environmental Learning Resource Centers funded
