  4. Granular and Liquid Fertilizer, Which to Choose Fertilizer comes into two types: granular and liquid. There are advantages and disadvantages in each. Solid fertilizer may be finely crushed, mixed, granulated, coated and processed into uniform prills which come in three types: plain, which are the most commonly used; pelleted or coated, which are uniform and more expensive; and slow release, which is coated with one of several substances that cause the nutrients to be released over a period of time, usually from three to nine months. Liquid plant fertilizers are concentrates or water-soluble powders of synthetic chemicals that contain a mix of nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and iron, and they need to be diluted with water when fertilizing.

On the other hand, because granular fertilizers do not immediately affect plants, it may take a long time for positive results to show. Plants may not receive nutrients fast enough to help them recover from deficiencies. Granular fertilizers also need moisture and warm temperatures to act. The pH of soil may also adversely influence their effectiveness. As with liquid plant fertilizer, inappropriate application of granular fertilizer will leave telltale streaks and spots of burned grass on lawn.

After following the directions to dilute the concentrate or create a fertilizer solution from powder mix, you can apply liquid plant fertilizer using spray bottles or sprinkler attachments. The fertilizer solution acts faster than slow release granules and provides plants with growth-spurring nutrients more frequently.

In contrast to ready-to-use granules,additional work is needed in preparing the fertilizer solution, because too much liquid plant fertilizer can burn grass, leaving discolored streaks on the lawn, and damage plant foliage. The fertilizer solution can also leach deep into the soil, making it unavailable. Consequently, liquid plant fertilizer needs more frequent applications than other types of fertilizer. Liquid plant fertilizer may also contribute to water pollution if it seeps into storm drains.
