About the FOMA Founded in 1904 as the Florida Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, the association’s name was changed in 1942 to the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA). The FOMA is the state association of Osteopathic Physicians in Florida. The Executive Office is located in Tallahassee, Florida.

  5. About Osteopathic Medicine in Florida There are two Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine in Florida. • Nova Southeastern University – College of Osteopathic Medicine (NSU-COM), Ft. Lauderdale • Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine(LECOM-Bradenton), Bradenton

  6. Governmental Relations The FOMA represents osteopathic physicians in the state of Florida at the Florida Legislature by: Monitoring legislation Testifying before legislative committees Sending our members weekly Capitol Updates during Session Publishing Know the Issues

Governmental Relations The FOMA also strives to make sure Osteopathic Physicians (DOs) are represented on all relevant state boards and commissions, working in close liaison with agencies that determine practice rights.   12. Public Relations Our public relations program educates the public on osteopathic medicine. By communicating with government officials and consumers, we create better understanding of our profession and improve the professional climate in which we must practice. We publish the FOMA Journal quarterly that includes a variety of topics in healthcare.

Public Relations The FOMA also strives to keep our members informed through its Public Relations department by: • Providing a weekly FOMA Member Newswire that includes timely information from a variety of sources including • MQA updates and information • DOH updates and information • AOA updates and information • And many more

Membership • From 1992 to the present, FOMA has maintained its status as the third largest state osteopathic medical association in the country and continues to advance the science and art of Osteopathic Medicine in Florida. • Working together through committees, we form a network of voluntary efforts in all phases of health care. Joining together, we represent an expanse of knowledge and ideas as broad as those of our combined membership and as diversified as the many specialties we represent. • In 2011, Florida has 5,427 active licensed osteopathic physicians and 211 inactive licenses.

Mission Statement The objectives of this association are to advance the science and art of osteopathic medicine and surgery, and to extend improved healthcare and benefits of scientific advancement in the treatment, prevention, and alleviation of human ailments to the public in the state of Florida.
