  2. The Captain can choose to power the boat with: • electricity stored in huge batteries • diesel engines that generate electricity • or a combination of both. Click “Home” to clear the screen 2

  3. TRACO windows use a double sheet of glass instead of a single sheet, like on most boats. Insulated windows help keep the boat at a comfortable temperature. Click “Home” to clear the screen 3

  4. duct sock Heating and air conditioning system keeps the boat at a temperature between 68 and 82 degrees F. Lightweight and washable fabric duct socks replace metal ducts and improve air quality. Click “Home” to clear the screen 4

  5. Low-flow toilets and waterless urinals reduce waste water by 80,000 gallons per year. Using filtered river water to flush toilets saves use of municipal water. The boat releases NO waste water into the rivers. Wastewater is kept in a tank onboard, and pumped into the ALCOSAN sanitary sewer line at dock. Click “Home” to clear the screen 5

  6. Explorer is designed to accommodate 60-90 students in each school field trip, and can hold up to 150 people plus our crew for other events. Our older boat can only hold a maximum of 43, including our crew. Click “Home” to clear the screen 6

  7. Cabinets, wood doors, carpeting, ceiling and interior surfaces all have high post-industrial recycled content (waste materials from factories) or are made from rapidly renewable resources. The cabinets are made of WoodStalk, a recycled wheat straw product. Click “Home” to clear the screen 7

  8. Explorer’s hull is made entirely of recycled steel. Additionally, all paints, coatings and building materials are “Low VOC.” This means that they do not release chemicals like formaldehyde into the air. Click “Home” to clear the screen 8

  9. Explorer’s delivery crew brought the boat On a 1,600 mile trip from Bayou LaBatre, AL to Pittsburgh, PA. This picture was taken just after the boat sailed out of the Emsworth Lock and into the Pittsburgh Pool on 8-13-08. Click “Home” to clear the screen 9

  11. Hybrid Electric Diesel Engine: •biodiesel fuel blend to be used •diesel generators charge batteries, power motors, or both •reduces total energy needed by ~50% per year •reduces gaseous and particulate pollution emissions. Click “Home” to clear the screen 11

  12. Daily boat & office operations include: • recycling glass, plastic, aluminum, paper and cardboard • replacing paper towels with washable microfiber cloths • replacing ammonia-based sprays with peroxide-based biodegradeable cleaners. Click “Home” to clear the screen 12
