This is a crisis: Facing up to the age of environmental breakdown Mainstream political and policy debates have failed to recognise that human impacts on the environment have reached a critical stage, potentially eroding the conditions upon which socioeconomic stability is possible.   3. 30% OF ALL GREENHOUSE GASES COME FROM FOOD PRODUCTION (IPPC 2014) Twenty-six percent of the Planet’s ice-free land is used for livestock grazing and 33 percent of croplands are used for livestock feed production.

  5. Methane is the most potent greenhouse gas because it traps x25 as much heat as carbon dioxide. Methane is released by micro-organisms in animals and plants. Can you name some of the most damaging sources of methane?

  6. Sources of methane: • Lakes and oceans, which are now covering more of the planet because of Arctic warming • Manure lagoons • Stomachs of cows and sheep • Wetlands and rice fields • Fracking, mining, burning wood and vegetation

  8. Sheffield alone is reported to waste up to £400 million pounds worth of food per year. Sheffield has at least 20 foodbanks and is working through organisations such as Food Works and FareShare to intercept supermarket waste food and either cook with it or quickly distribute it. FOOD SECURITY – GLOBAL AND LOCAL • Lower incomes, yet uncertain harvests and rising prices • Harvests are threatened worldwide • Droughts and floods lead to hunger and famine • Antibiotic use in farming leads to drug-resistant bacteria (UK farm regulations now tightening) • Britain imports 40% of our total food consumption • 3 million tonnes of soya are imported into the UK just to feed farm animals

  13. WHAT WE CAN DO as individuals • Modify our diet • Avoid waste • Shop local • Eat seasonal fruit and veg • Avoid packaging • And more...

CUT DOWN ON FOOD WASTE • How many of these things do you do? • Don’t buy more than you need • Store correctly • Scrub vegetables instead of peeling • If you have a garden, make compost • If not, use a community compost if possible • PLAN shopping and menus • Cook the right amount, get a (second hand?) pressure cooker • Use leftovers • Plan to avoid waste water and energy in cooking • If you boil or steam vegetables, don’t put the water down the drain - it’s full of nutrientsLancet report: we need to cut waste by at least half
