Simile • Simile-using like or as to compare 2 things. • He is free as a bird.
Metaphor • Metaphor-comparing 2 things without using like or as; something is something else. • She has a heart of gold.
Hyperbole • Hyperbole-using exaggeration to make a point. • Her brain is the size of a pea.
Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia-sound word. The door bell ding when I pushed it.
Alliteration • Alliteration-repetition of beginning sound. • The bumble bee buzz around town.
Personification • Personification-giving human qualities to something not human. • The rain kissed my cheeks as it fell.
Idiom • Idiom-a well known expression that does not mean what it says. • Baker’s dozen
