  2. Skeletal System Major Function The five major functions of the Skeletal System are: structure, movement, protection, blood cell production, and storage. In the structure of the Skeletal System bones gives the body shape and supports the weight of the muscles and organs. Movement is also a major function of the skeletal system. The skeletal muscle is attached to the bone so it pulls on the bone when it contracts. The vertebrae and ribs also have protective functions by protecting important structures like the spinal cord, heart and lungs. The rib cage surrounds the organs of respiration. Red and white blood cells are made in the red marrow of bones. At birth, and in early childhood, all bone marrow is red. As the person ages, about half of the body's marrow turns to yellow marrow. Another function is storage. The body uses calcium and phosphorous for processes like muscle contraction. As people grow older they lose calcium, this could lead to osteoporosis(bones getting weaker).

  4. Parts of the Skeletal System Tendon- tough tissue that connects muscle to bone. Ligament- a sheet or band that connects two bones or holds an organ in place. Bone- pieces of hard, whitish tissue making up the skeleton in humans and other vertebrates. Rib- curved bones articulated in pairs to the spine, protecting the thoracic cavity. Skull- a bone framework enclosing the brain; the skeleton of a person's or animal's head. Joint- a place where two bones meet. Hinge joint- it is located in the knee. It allows your leg to bend and straighten. Pivot joint- it is located in the elbow. This allows your arm to twist Ball-and-socket joint- it is located in the shoulder. This joint allows the most movement

Facts • The skeletal system includes all of the bones and joints in the body. • There are 206 bones in the skeletal system of an adult. • The skeletal system’s primary function is to form a solid framework that supports and protects the body's organs. • The femur bone (in the leg) is the longest bone in the body. It is about one-quarter of a person's overall height. • There are two types of bone tissue, compact hard bones and spongy bone. Most bones contain both types of tissue.

  6. The muscular system is an organ system made up of skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscles. All muscles connected to the skeletal system have the same basic function. The muscles contract and relax to allow the skeletal system to move. Without the skeletal system, the human body would not be able to support itself, but without muscles, the skeletal system wouldn't be able to move. To help the body move freely, the skeletal system works very closely with the muscular system. Each individual muscle in the body is connected to one or more parts of the skeletal system.   7. Circulatory System Along with giving muscles the support they need to allow the body to move freely, the skeletal system is also necessary for proper function of the circulatory system. Marrow is created inside bones and aids the production of red and white blood cells. The circulatory system circulates red and white blood cells through the body. Red and white blood cells are necessary for the body to function properly. These cells couldn't be circulated through the body unless the bones of the skeletal system first created marrow.
